Tales of Brave Ulysses, Starring Barack Obama

gustave-dore-ancient-mariner-illustration It looks like the President has lashed Tim Geithner to the mast like an unwilling Ancient Mariner and is steering our economy right into Charybdis’ gaping maw*.

At least the President made himself recession-proof by signing a big, fat deal worth half a million dollars not to write a book just before he took the Oath of Office. On the other hand, he’s ready to lay a golden fleecing on every one who runs a company, because…well…

Look, I really don’t have an answer that makes any sense. He’s running the old, dusty 1960s radical playbook here step by step. It’s hard to make the case these days that he’s not so abjectly ignorant about economics that a kindergartner could trounce him at Monopoly. All the evidence so far points to the sort of financial savvy that you usually see in folks who spend their paychecks on lotto tickets hoping that the Powerball comes up big for them. Those folks aren’t bad people, but you sure as heck wouldn’t put them in charge of handling your retirement fund.

But we did put Barack Obama in charge and now we’re stuck with him. How does he repay us for our generous acceptance? For one, his shameless demagoguery is scaring corporate executives so much that they’re looking toward Europe as a safe haven. Europe is practically salivating over the chance to poach our best financial minds and, if that happens we can kiss one of the man engines of our economy goodbye. It would certainly kill New York City, which relies almost entirely on the taxes paid by those executives to fund the lavish welfare programs and services the rest of the city enjoys.

President Obama doesn’t know economics, but he does know politics. Perhaps the financial death of a city that not only voted for him by a wide majority but also whose residents dumped millions into his campaign coffers will make him see the light.

I hope he gets right before that happens, but he doesn’t seem to be the kind of guy who gets out in front of a problem. His whole career has been about dancing around until he can find a way to wriggle out of any potential consequences.

* And they say we bloggers are uneducated. Ha!

PS. As a side note, Mr. President? You were inaugurated on January 20th and your CBS interview taped in the third week of March. That’s a few more days than 40. It’s not exactly a sign of competence that you don’t know how long you’ve had your job.

Sheesh, cut the man some slack…he's only off by a few weeks.

Unfortunately, he can say 40 and the uneducated drones who watch CBS will believe it. 'Cuz, after all, they only have 20 fingers and toes and it's hard to count past that.
