Our Drugs Cure the World, But That Can Change
Will our push toward more government control of the pharmaceutical market lead to fewer life-saving, innovative drugs? Duane Lester thinks so and he’s written a pretty good defense of his position. I recommend it highly. He begins by pointing out that, once upon a time, Europe led the world in drug development. Now we lead the world by a wide margin. But our lead isn’t permanent and we can lose it if we give in to the sirens’ song of nationalized health care.
Right now, the drug companies aren’t on the President’s immediate hit list but his desire to quickly socialize our health care system, it won’t be long. Our mostly-free profit-based system of developing drugs and getting them to market has led to, quite literally, millions of lives being saved and a quality of life our forefathers could only dream about. We shouldn’t put that at risk to satisfy anyone’s ideological temper tantrums.
