Happy Pi Day, 2009!

pie-pi.jpgToday is Pi Day and I’m sure you have all sorts of festive activities planned for today. Of course, if you’re one of the authors of a certain Wikipedia page, you might note in a somewhat snotty manner that Pi Day was really March 4th.

Pi Day is technically March 4, but observed on March 14 (3/14), due to π being roughly equal to 3.14 and the general population being unaware of numeric radixes.

Once you’ve overcome that particular shame (and figured out why the author chose to use the word “radixes” over the more expected “radices”) you may feel free to party with the rest of the math geeks.

Of course, if you didn’t have time to plan a shindig tonight, you can pick up the spare on Pi Approximation Day on July 22. That should give you enough time to buy this for your favorite arithmophiliac.

If that’s a bit much for you, there are a couple books that they’re almost guaranteed to find interesting.

UPDATE: I nearly forgot the joke I heard earlier this week.

Q: How is the Stimulus Bill like Pi?
A: Both are irrational, repeat forever, and have only been calculated to a trillion or so digits.
