The Mystery of the Unknown Presidential Autograph Seeker
Take a quick read over this story and tell me if you see the same odd thing in it that I do.
A reporter was escorted out of a White House event by Secret Service agents on Wednesday afternoon after he approached President Obama to seek an autograph.
At the end of an East Room signing ceremony for legislation funding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, an unidentified member of the media jumped the rope penning off reporters from invited guests in an apparent attempt to get Obama’s autograph, according to a White House aide.
…
Secret Service agents were later seen examining the journalist’s drivers’ license, which suggests he was not a holder of a so-called hard pass, which are given to journalists permanently cleared to enter the White House complex. The reporter also had a black briefcase with him. There are no details yet on the reporter’s name or publication.
This bill-signing was the top story on every evening newscast yesterday. It was broadcast live on Fox, I know, because it cut in on a show I wanted to watch. That room was packed to the rafters with reporters toting all sorts of cameras and recording devices. There were plenty of other folks there, too, from the loudness of the cheer that went up when the President announced that he was signing the bill. For all that, no one could provide any details at all about the mystery “reporter”.
How is that even possible?
Surely, someone had to get a photograph. The reporters had to have talked about it afterwards. I mean, they’re reporters, for Pete’s sake. It seems impossible to me that a room full of professional journalists who work for national news-gathering organizations could only figure out that the “reporter” was a guy.
It seems more than a little suspicious to me. Perhaps they knew the “reporter” (perhaps through his work on a well-known left-wing blog, for instance) and didn’t want to make him look like a besotted teenager. I’m just guessing here, but there has to be some reason that the well-honed observational powers of our media elite all failed at the same time.
