President Obama has given us another historic first, a Secretary of the Treasury who is also a tax cheat.
I need to be fair to the President, who has spent his entire political life surrounded by corruption and incompetence. It’s all he’s known. Why should he blink at Geithner’s dishonesty?
I need to be fair to Geithner, too. He may not have intentionally committed tax fraud for four years. It’s entirely possible that he was just too arrogant to heed the warnings he got from his employer about paying his taxes and too incompetent to use an off-the-shelf computer program used regularly by millions of Americans.
It’s hard for me to fault the President or Secretary Geithner. They are what they are. I do fault the Senate Republicans who threw their principles into the toilet and flushed hard. Timothy Geithner is not the only man who can help pull us out of our financial woes and if it took us another couple of weeks to find someone who is as qualified and who hasn’t cheated on his taxes, then we can wait. We’re not going to get so bad in a couple of weeks that we can’t recover.
So far as I’m concerned, the ten Republicans who voted to confirm Geithner have given up any claim to conservative support. Michelle Malkin has the full roll call vote. Here is the list of the ten Senators who should be seeking new employment when their term ends.
Corker (R-TN)
Cornyn (R-TX)
Crapo (R-ID)
Ensign (R-NV)
Graham (R-SC)
Gregg (R-NH)
Hatch (R-UT)
Shelby (R-AL)
Snowe (R-ME)
Voinovich (R-OH)
Some things are very important. Having a competent man running our Treasury Department right now is one of them. These Republicans have proven that they take their brand of “Ned Beatty in Deliverance” bipartisanship far more seriously than your financial well-being.
UPDATE: Paula dubs them “The RINO Hall of Shame”
