But personal freedom really does matter and that decision doesn't belong to bureaucrats but to us. That's what democracy is all about.
Besides, I smoke too. It doesn't change my stance on the matter, but it does help "bring it home" once and again.

Sure I'll defend smokers. That said, I'm fine with the restaurant bans. In fact, I meet the coolest people when I'm outside smoking in front of the bar. But the third hand smoke? That's just silly. Yes, there are toxins, but nowhere near being near someone who just did insulation in their house. Or painted with oil paints. Or handled fertilizers, or motor oil, or sheetrock, or even Third World plywood. Ever met people like that? We all do, all the time. In the end, I will die of cancer. But the cigarettes and pot I smoke, and the alcohol I drink, won't be my demise. My exposure to Radon and the Sun has already done me in. It's just a matter of time, and which cancer will win. It's like a NASCAR race, you know about how long it will take, you're just waiting to see who the winner is. But you always know which teams don't have a chance. Team Tobacco ain't winning this time. I'll lose, but I already know that. And if the Sun does me in, I won't curse it.
As for fascists coming after you, well, they always will. Some are liberal, some are conservative. Whatever. Thomas Jefferson said it the best: "Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom."

Wow Jimmie! I wasn't expecting you to defend us smokers.
