Next They’ll Come After Second-Hand Alcohol and Fourth-Hand CO2.
Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air of second-hand smoke, but experts now have identified another smoking-related threat to children’s health that isn’t as easy to get rid of: third-hand smoke.
That’s the term being used to describe the invisible yet toxic brew of gases and particles clinging to smokers’ hair and clothing, not to mention cushions and carpeting, that lingers long after smoke has cleared from a room. The residue includes heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials that young children can get on their hands and ingest, especially if they’re crawling or playing on the floor.
This is industrial-grade junk science. We’re still debunking the garbage that’s been peddled about second-hand smoke. Now this.
This new scare isn’t science. It’s yet another pretense for the do-gooders to drive more government down your throats. You can’t smoke in restaurants, or bars, or government buildings, or plenty of public places. Soon, you won’t be able to smoke in your own home or in your car because this new menace can still harm the children, who the government has decided it must protect, regardless of your own rights as a parent or an adult.
If you don’t smoke, you don’t have much reason to be happy about this. At some point the nanny fascists will find something to ban that you do enjoy. Count on it.

Wow Jimmie! I wasn't expecting you to defend us smokers. That said, I'm fine with the restaurant bans. In fact, I meet the coolest people when I'm outside smoking in front of the bar. But the third hand smoke? That's just silly. Yes, there are toxins, but nowhere near being near someone who just did insulation in their house. Or painted with oil paints. Or handled fertilizers, or motor oil, or sheetrock, or even Third World plywood. Ever met people like that? We all do, all the time. In the end, I will die of cancer. But the cigarettes and pot I smoke, and the alcohol I drink, won't be my demise. My exposure to Radon and the Sun has already done me in. It's just a matter of time, and which cancer will win. It's like a NASCAR race, you know about how long it will take, you're just waiting to see who the winner is. But you always know which teams don't have a chance. Team Tobacco ain't winning this time. I'll lose, but I already know that. And if the Sun does me in, I won't curse it.
As for fascists coming after you, well, they always will. Some are liberal, some are conservative. Whatever. Thomas Jefferson said it the best: "Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom."
Sure I'll defend smokers. Junk Science is junk no matter whose axe it helps to grind. But personal freedom really does matter and that decision doesn't belong to bureaucrats but to us. That's what democracy is all about.
Besides, I smoke too. It doesn't change my stance on the matter, but it does help "bring it home" once and again.
