Minimum Wage, Maximum Hurt
Duane Lester has a nifty post on the minimum wage and the detrimental effect it has on the poor. That the minimum wage doesn’t help the poor shouldn’t be a great surprise to anyone with a even a passing familiarity with economics or common sense. However, what is interesting is just how badly the poor fare when the minimum wage is increased. Some of the links Duane has found make for fascinating reading.
The other very interesting part of his post deals with who does benefit when the government pushes up the minimum wage. I don’t know that you’ll be terribly surprised when you read that either.
Duane recommends a book called Minimum Wages in his post and it looks like a worthwhile read. You may want to pick it up for the Poli-Sci or Econ geek in your life or even for yourself so that you’re well-armed intellectually when the next minimum wage debate comes around.
