Billy Joel Needs to Stop Writing Songs
Let me stipulate that I consider Billy Joel an excellent musician, one of the best pure musicians ever to appear in rock and roll. On the other hand, he is only an average lyricist and his skills have gotten measurably worse since he took less insterest in writing songs and more interest in noodling around with solely instrumental works.
Regardless of his skill, he has no place writing a song that purports to represent what a soldier feels like away from home. He couldn’t do it when he wrote “Goodnight, Saigon” and he can’t do it now.
Cassandra, on the other hand, knows exactly what separation feels like and writes about it beautifully. If Joel were a smart man, he’d offer her the most heartfelt apology he can muster and a nice pile of money in exchange for the privelege of setting her words to music.
