“Trust Me”, Says Obama. “Okey Dokey”, Says the MSM.
Well, I guess that’s that then, huh?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President-elect Barack Obama had no contact with scandal-hit Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his advisers did not have “inappropriate” discussions with the governor’s staff about filling Obama’s vacant Senate seat, Obama’s office said on Monday.
An Obama spokesman said in a statement that the president-elect’s aides, who had earlier promised to release a full review of any contacts with Blagojevich’s team within days, would now release their report next week to comply with a request from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Notice the interesting second walkback. When this story first broke, Obama, who has been a close ally of Blagojevich for more than a couple years, claimed that there was no contact at all. When that story fell through, he claimed that he didn’t have any contact. Now, the standard is no “inappropriate” contact.
So far, the MSM has let the President-Elect slide on his changing stories. Reuters, for its part, says the only ones even a little bit curious about why Obama and his staff, who was practically joined to Blagojevich at the hip politically, would be so cleanly-detached from the Governor now. I imagine an enterprising reporter, one who didn’t have stars in his eyes, might be able to put himself within spitting distance of a Pulitzer on this story. Of course, if that same reporter were to make nice, he might find himself with a really cushy government job.
In related news, the WaPo reports that P-E’s approval ratings are “unscathed” and that he “sails over” the scandal (via memeorandum). Of course, any connection among Obama’s high approval rating, the gentle headline of the WaPo piece, and the soft touch by Reuters is highly-coincidental, no?
