Democrats Go Old-School, and That Ain’t Good

The strange story of Hillary Clinton’s soon-to-be vacant Senate seat gets even more strange. Let me see if I can sort it out to make it look less strange.

New York Governor David Paterson, who is only Governor because the former Governor after being caught out hiring a high-priced but not particularly-attractive hooker, needs to fill the Senate Seat that is being vacated by Hillary Clinton. Clinton, who ran for President in a bitterly-fought campaign against Barack Obama is Obama’s choice to be our new Secretary of State. Paterson’s leading candidate thus far seems to be Caroline Kennedy whose prime qualifications for the position are her last name and her contacts inside the New York Democratic Party. This is a big opportunity for Paterson to impress the President-Elect, the new Secretary of State, the Democrats in the Senate, and the New York Democrats (not all of whom will be pleased at the same time). Today, we learn that Kennedy is indeed interested in the seat from Al Sharpton, who has taken time off from race-bating and stirring up riots to somehow interject himself into yet another story where he doesn’t belong.

Hmmm…seems I have failed to make that story sound any more sensible. I think it may take a far more talented fantasist to do that. Or, I’ll just leave things to Ron Coleman:

The prospect of this appointment makes such a pathetic joke of democracy, much less the concept of meritocracy, that you wonder which governor should be more embarrassed: the chief executive crook of Illinois running an all-but-open auction for a Senate appointment, or a weak, unelected caretaker governor of New York bidding for the favor of New York’s party and cultural elites in the hope that perhaps he’ll be allowed to “stay on”?

Ooooh, yeah. That’s just about perfect.
