I am sorry to report tonight that noted journalist Andrea Mitchell was struck down today with a rare form of amnesia that caused her to forget the past eight years. Today, she was on MS-NBC speaking with Norah O’Donnell about the appointment of Bill Richardson and giving the President-Elect a tongue bath about the diversity of his Cabinet selections when the malady manifested suddenly and without warning.
The condition reached its worst well into the segment and caused Mitchell to say this without any trace of self-consciousness.
It was very artless and very calculated in the way they did it, and what this seems to be is effortless. They’re creating a mosaic, but they’re not doing it by self-consciously creating that mosaic. Perhaps it’s that America has come so far in the intervening years that there are so many highly, you know, qualified and experienced women and minorities who are already in big positions that it is less exacting a science.
This sudden and strange amnesia is the only possible explanation (aside from outright dishonesty) that explains how Mitchell could have entirely forgotten the historic diversity of the George W Bush cabinet which was created with no great appearance of effort and, thanks to reporters like Mitchell, went almost entirely unreported.
The malady also apparently briefly struck O’Donnell, who entirely forgot that Colin Powell had been Secretary of State.
Her current condition is unknown.
