I think that's a commonly-held view among social busybodies on both left and right. It's wrong, but it's common.

Our families & communities are fragmented because of lack of personal responsibility. Freedom doesn't mean "free from responsibility" or "free from consequences", it means freedom from government intrusion and/or over-bearing government and tyranny. What's funny is if he would single out those "extreme individualists" (who are not really individualists at all) for the individual condemnation they deserve for not taking responsibility for their own circumstances, families or communities, it would go a long way toward alleviating some of the problems we are all suffering from due to the most irresponsible members in our society getting a pass for whatever they've done or refused to do. (Personal bankruptcy, fatherless children, drug abuse, joblessness are all good examples of this.)

The extreme individualism he refers to is really collectivism. Not sure how he confused the two, but I think he is equating selfishness & self-centeredness with individualism. It is not the same thing.

I think if Dreher got his head out of politics for a few minutes he'd see how ridiculous his statement really is.
