Well, the Thai and Malay have done a damn good job of slowing down piracy in the Malacca Straight. And they don’t have near the resources we do.

My guess is they probably don't have a bunch of anti-Thai & anti-Malay lawyers in their own country, nor whiney, sniveling liberals, ignorant actors/actresses or a "film maker" named Michael Moore who are all ready to conspire to show the world how eeeevil the US & her military are.
But let me just get this straight - you, fostert, are advocating that our military board foreign-owned vessels in foreign lands and shoot suspected robbers? Without a trial? Without being read their rights and/or paying for them lawyers? Don't you think we should capture them and bring them to the US? So we can make sure they get the finest health care, and culturally appropriate, healthy meals and any religious or cultural comforts they may need.... I can't believe you would even advocate such a thing without even thinking about how hard the pirates lives have been up to this present day; clearly they live in a very poor country with limited access to health care & education...probably, their mothers don't even love them. And you just want to shoot them without even giving them a fair, international trial to find out if they are guilty. What kind of an animal are you?

Think it can’t work? I'll note that piracy is essentially a criminal activity. And you can never stop crime completely. But a 95% reduction on piracy is achievable. In the Malacca Straight, they've cut it down by 80%. They still have some work to do, but they're still working. They have the cooperation of the Chinese mafias, and that's what it takes in Southeast Asia. So why do the mafias cooperate? Because their ships are being raided too. Even criminals are victims of crime. And, yes, they do appreciate the irony. But they don't tolerate it. We shouldn't either.

"Well, the Thai and Malay have done a damn good job of slowing down piracy in the Malacca Straight."

I'll note that piracy is essentially a criminal activity. Probably because they were once the most fearsome pirates in the world. After that era, they just paid other people to do their piracy. The Americans are the only ones to ever defeat piracy. We created our Navy exactly for that purpose. I hate to agree with Bill Kristol, but he's actually right this time. We need to stop this. And I don't think it will be very hard. The key is to attack them on land. Pirates have to go to port sometime. Track them down and kill them in front of their relatives. These guys aren't pushing any agenda, they just want the money. Make it unprofitable, and they'll stop. Think it can't work? Well, the Thai and Malay have done a damn good job of slowing down piracy in the Malacca Straight. And they don't have near the resources we do. Granted, the geography is easier there, but it doesn't really matter if you attack them when they go to port.

The Brits never went against piracy.
