Am I overly naive for getting just a bit angry that even after 220 years we still have to fight to keep our political speech free?

I honestly can’t think of any good reason that these jumped-up little fascist wanna-be politicians can’t understand that “reform” does not mean “slapping duct tape across our mouths”.

If these guys really wanted to solve the problem of money in politics, there would be a governmental fire sale happening right now. They’d be shoving everything they possibly could back to the states and local government and paring the federal government back to something within eyeshot of its Constitutionally-mandated duties. That is the only way to ensure that money doesn’t have an inordinately large influence over the lives of billions of Americans.

The simple answer is that they do not want to solve the problem at all. They want to control it. When they control the problem, they can carve out protections for their personal power and all the lovely little perks that accompany that power (campaign donations, free gifts, multi-million dollar books deals, and cushy high-wage, low-work consulting jobs after they leave government). They’d rather take a chainsaw to your First Amendment rights than give up a single ounce of their power.

Notice also who these greedy little weasels want to protect. They’re all in favor of protecting journalists. Why do you think that is?

Well, when was the last time you saw a serious story from any MSM outlet about the size of government? When was the last time any newspaper or magazine or network told you just how much money each member of Congress controls? When was the last editorial you read on the crushing pressure that your legislators must feel under the weight of all the money at their fingertips? I’ll bet it’s been a very long time, if ever.

That should give you a clue why they’re more than willing to decide who should be protected by the First Amendment and who should shut up and do what they’re told.
