The problem is that while there's less ice OVERALL in the Arctic Seas, the area where the narwhals live--Baffin Bay and the Davis Strait--is seeing more ice than usual. The reason for this is because as Greenland's ice melts and flows into the Bay, it lowers the salinization (salt content %) of the water, which makes it easier for the water to freeze in the winter. I know it sounds ridiculous, but there's actually a good reason why global warming would cause more ice where the narwhals are.
