Can You See Me? (UPDATE: Success!)
I’ve gotten a report that there may be some problems accessing The Shack here. I’m told that a good amount of the time, when you try to access the site, you just get a 404 page. I’ve not seen this happen regularly, but I’d like to know if anyone else has experienced the same thing.
Also, FeedBurner can’t seem to find my site. I’ve tried to have it build an RSS feed, so I know that my feed is reliable and gets out to as many people as possible, but every time I try, FB tells me that the domain name just isn’t there. Again, I’ve not really had any trouble with this, but I’d like to know if anyone else is.
If you’ve had problems recently getting to The Shack, or if the RSS feed you get from me is doing anything funky, please leave a comment and let me know what is or isn’t happening (and please be as specific as you can).
If there’s something wrong, I want to get to the bottom of it ASAP. Thanks for helping!
UPDATE: The problem, identified as a couple bad DNS settings, has been fixed. It only took a twenty minute conversation with Riika, my angelic web host, before we found the problem. And when I say “we” I mean “her” because most of the problem-solving part of the phone call involved her saying lots of technical stuff and me making vague grunting sounds because I had run out of ways of saying “Gosh, I don’t know what could be wrong”. It’s the first time I’ve ever spoken with her and I am pleased to say that she’s as charming and delightful a conversation partner as she is professional and knowledgeable as a web host.
Be sure, though, to drop me a line if you have any other problems. Now that she knows what she’s looking for, if it happens again (and it shouldn’t), she can stomp on it quickly.
And thank you all for being so patient.

Happens to me all the time. I have you in my google reader, and that is where I launch all the recent articles into open tabs. Quite often, I get the 404 message. It is strange, because I'm am usually still able to see a good potion of the article from within the reader but the page will not load. About half the time, if I just reload the page it comes up; but the other half the time, I can't get them to load for several minutes & usually just have to wait a while & come back to it.
I don't know if you remember when I told you previously when I not only couldn't get the pages to load but also the subscription would disappear from the reader? Well, the problem with the pages not loading has been going on since then but the subscription disappearing hasn't happened since (that I've seen).
I do remember that. It seems we've traded one problem for another.
I've sent off an e-mail, so we'll see what that does. I believe that my web host brought in a new server (or swapped one out) not all that long ago and that could be the issue. Hopefully, she can get to the bottom of it.
I have had this problem also. It has been going on for about 2-3 months.
Hmm…now I am perplexed. I'll have to leave a note to my web nosting company to see if they can detect any problems.
I've also been having this problem for the past 2-3 months.
When I click on your link either from my protopage site or my favorite links in IE I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and then the 'most likely reasons' you are not connected, the website is having difficulties or there might be a typing error in the address. Generally this will happen for a whole day. I'll try about 4-5 times at different times and get the same message.
Same problem. Shame dat!
Jimmie, I have had the same problem as Cassandra.
Okay, this bugs me for a couple reasons.
1) If you guys, who are my faithful readers, have had to fight through a jungle of 404 pages to see the site, how many other folks tried once, got nothing, then never came back again? Gah! I could have lost millions of readers!
Or more likely tens. But still…
2) I've never really had the problem, so I can't even begin to guess what's causing it. That is a frustrating feeling.
But I did send an SOS to my web hosting genius lady and I hope to hear something back very soon.
I hate to be a pain, but I just clicked on your link to see if I could get through (5:55PM CST) and got the same message I've been getting all along. I tried again a few minutes later and got through. Hopefully I am typing this as it's being fixed
I suspect that it'll take a little bit of time for the changes to take full effect. Feedburner seems to be working now.
Just in case, you might want to clear your cached internet files, in case there's one that's using the old pointer (which I understand it possible). Hopefully that'll clear it up.
Hopefully we got the problem solved. You are telling people the correct thing to do in clearing out their cache's if they are still seeing 404's. Let me know if it still act's wonky
