Lieberman Can Stay, But Only If He’s Defanged and Muzzled
Never let it be said that the Democratic party doesn’t allow principled dissent. They do, on the condition that immediately afterwards you issue a groveling apology and agree to wear a muzzle.
Joe Lieberman votes with the Democrats on virtually every issue except Iraq. His ACU rating (often used to measure the liberal or conservative bent of a member of Congress) is an eight. However, he committed the unforgiveable sin of backing John McCain over Barack Obama in the election and even said that electing someone without a scrap of leadership experience probably wouldn’t be the smartest move for us. Of course, this means that the Democrats are seriously considering casting him into outer darkness, or at least stripping him of his Committee chairmanships and relegating him to the back bench.
Senator Evan Bayh has a better plan, though, a plan full of mercy and great beneficence. Lieberman can keep everything he’s earned if he fully recants for everything he said during the campaign and works with a Sword of Democles hanging over his head every day. Neither is he allowed to use any influence he has as a chairman to “undermine Obama’s presidency”. Otherwise, he’s gone.
I think that Torquemada gave heretics a better offer. At least if they recanted he let them go.
