Votes are still being counted in some states, but conservatives stinging from last night’s losses are planning to get together to plan the movement’s future — and so far, it doesn’t look like that vision includes John McCain.
McCain, who made a poorly-received appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference last year, was not included on a list of major movement figures invited to next year’s gathering e-mailed to supporters Wednesday morning. More than a dozen conservative leaders made the cut — including McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin.
Yes, well, they’d be interested in inviting conservatives to a conservative conference, wouldn’t they? John McCain, though an honorable man, isn’t part of conservatism by his own choice. Perhaps if he developed some real interest in smaller and less intrusive government, lower taxes across the board, not punishing stockholders for the successes of the companies they own, strong enforcement of our current immigration laws, and greater individual rights he would find an invitation in his mailbox.
But then, I don’t think he’s particularly bothered that he wasn’t invited. I think John McCain will do just fine among the friends he’s spent a decade cultivating in the Senate.
