Play that Funky Race Card, White Boy

Roger Simon (the bad one who works for Politico) has a laughable article today on race and politics. Well, it’s actually not as serious as all that. It’s basically an article telling us how when he saw John McCain on the campaign trail, it made him want to run and hide because he thought that Zombie George Wallace had risen from the grave and was wearing a John McCain suit. Basically, he’s covering for the political opportunists who take every conceivable opportunity to inject race into an election where the only one who’s made any mention of race, overt or otherwise, has been the Democrat.

To be sure, Simon isn’t actually accusing John McCain of being racist. He’s just saying that he needs to be careful.

Of course, the race card has been played because the McCain campaign has been punching Barack Obama a little bit too hard on his bigoted friends like Jeremiah Wright and Father Pfleger, his terrorist and Marxist friends like William Ayers and Bernadette Dorhn, his criminal friends like Tony Rezko and ACORN. The last thing Obama wants is for the American people to get a nice long look at the people he’s chosen as his friends, mentors, and business associates. So his footsoldiers toss out the race card and hope that he’ll be scared off by the merest whiff of a racism accusation.

Simon’s article amounts to the political equivalent of blackmail. If McCain’s not careful, intimates Simon, he will find his reputation trashed and his character deeply and brutally smeared. Obama’s drones will wreck him.

Jonah Goldberg kicks a few holes in the rotten timbers of Simon’s threat by pointing out the obvious. John McCain hasn’t done anything evem remotely racist this entire campaign.

McCain has done nothing to fuel racism. Or, put another way, the McCain campaign has done as much to promote prejudice as the Obama campaign has to inflame the vile passions behind the “Abort Sarah Palin” bumper sticker, Madonna’s stage video lumping McCain in with Hitler, the eugenic snobbery aimed at Palin’s son with Down syndrome, or the column in the Philadelphia Daily News that predicted a “race war” if McCain wins.

Meanwhile, here’s a guy who knows a thing or three about the vicious attacks of political opponents (via Hot Air). Listen to what he, a black man who is supporting John McCain, has dealt with:

ESSENCE.COM: I can imagine. You’ve generated a lot of buzz. What attention have you been getting since the rally?

HARRIS: I’ve heard from Americans of African descent, scattered across the fruited plain, to the tune of about 1,000 or more. I’d say 99 percent of it has been straight up hate on a level that I find a bit overwhelming. They’re coming through my blog, Facebook, e-mail and my business site.

ESSENCE.COM: What are people saying?
HARRIS: Let me just pull some up now. [Reading] “Hey man, are you the plant that sucked up to McCain? What were you thinking? You should be ashamed of yourself.” “Are you that self-loathing bastard?” This is just at random. “You are lost, sad and worthy of pity. I will not hate you; I will call you by your rightful name: House Nigger.” And that was mild! [Laughs.]

ESSENCE.COM: Speaking of the mood there, along with other recent McCain rallies, it seemed very angry and hostile. At some rallies people have shouted that Obama is a terrorist. How do you feel about this being the face of Republican voters right now?
HARRIS: That didn’t take place at the town hall, but I am aware of some stuff that happened in Ohio. I have to be honest with you, after the last 24 hours, no one can roll up on me and talk about hatred and inciting violence after what I have experienced.
[Emphasis Mine]

The fine Reverend has people like Roger “Race Card” Simon and John Lewis to thank for the abuse he’s taking. They seem to feel completely at home reaching back to the old ways of the blustering, bullying Democratic Party to get what they want. Just like George Wallace, the Democratic Governor of Alabama.

Oh, you didn’t know that? Yeah, that must have slipped through all the expert reporting that’s been done about John McCain’s not so latent racism. Funny how that happens, isn’t it?

Oh, by the way. George Wallace was a Democrat.
