“…I’m sick of paying for health insurance at work and that’s why I’m supporting Barack.”
I have no idea waht to do with this story. Ben Smith got a rather astonishing e-mail from a Republican strategist friend. The nut of the e-mail is that the folks in the strategist’s focus group just loved a McCain-friendly attack ad but still plan on voting Obama for President even though they are absolutely sure he’ll do a horrible job. Here are a couple sample statments from the crowd.
54 year-old white male, voted Kerry ’04, Bush ’00, Dole ’96, hunter, NASCAR fan…hard for Obama said: “I’m gonna hate him the minute I vote for him. He’s gonna be a bad president. But I won’t ever vote for another god-damn Republican. I want the government to take over all of Wall Street and bankers and the car companies and Wal-Mart run this county like we used to when Reagan was President.”
I’ve read what this guy said three times and I still can’t make sense of it. It seems to me that he’s saying the government should run the economy like it did when Reagan was President. If that’s what he thinks, then…wow.
He’s probably just the kind of person ACORN is looking for in a prospective voter registration gatherer.
Then there’s this charming bag of greed.
The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B. and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000. “Well, I don’t know much about this terrorist group Barack used to be in with that Weather guy but I’m sick of paying for health insurance at work and that’s why I’m supporting Barack.”
You know something, lady? I’m sick of paying for health insurance, too. How about you be a good neighbor and pay for both yours and mine? After all, that’s what you’re about to do to me. I might as well get in first so that you’re left holding the bag, right?
If this strategist really believes that these two knuckleheads are representative of Reagan Democrats or Independents, then he doesn’t deserve to work for any campaign. I’m not entirely surprised that Smith, who’s shown evidence or more than a little lean toward the Obamessiah in his reporting, printed this e-mail. Still, I wouldn’t take my cues from those two focus-groupers nor the person who thinks that they are a harbinger of Election Day.
Perhaps our problem this election is that we’re spending way too much time listening to people who believe they’re really intelligent instead of people who simply are intelligent.
