The now-famous “Burning Down the House” video has been pulled from YouTube after a copyright complaint from the Warner Music Group. Warner Music, which is owned by the same company that owns YouTube, complained that the four songs in the video were used without its consent. They did have a point and the original maker has reposted the video with new music.
On the other hand, NBC has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Barak Obama’s campaign demanding it remove a video that used NBC personalities and logos without its permission. The Obama campaign has refused to comply. YouTube has agreed to pull the video, but as of right now, it is still there.
I find it curious that YouTube would move so quickly to yank the video critical of Barack Obama and the Democratic Party but has yet to take action against a video that just as clearly violates its own rules. Okay, that’s not really true. I don’t find it curious. I find it typical. Time Warner has contributed gobs of money to the Obama campaign specifically and the Democrats in general and the foot-dragging on the NBC request isn’t coincidental. YouTube certainly acted correctly in promptly removing the video that used music without the owner’s consent and it’s wrong that the offending Obama campaign video is still up and available. I’ll have to check back tomorrow to see if the video is still there.
