Barack Obama’s Response to Palin’s Speech was Dumb When I Used it in Kindergarten
After Sarah Palin tore the roof of the sucka in Minneapolis, here’s Barack Obama’s reaction.
“The speech that Governor Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush’s speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we’ve heard from George Bush for the last eight years,” spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.
That’s it? His entire response is, “Yeah, well, someone wrote her speech for her, so nyah”?
How freaking lame! He just unfurled the political equivalent of “Oh yeah? Well your Mommy dresses you funny!” That was a tired taunt when we used it in elementary school.
Maybe Obama was too busy getting some soothing Preparation H slathered on his backside after Giuliani and Palin ripped him a new one tonight to come up with something more hopeful and changey.
I think we’re seeing a new line of attack on Palin and McCain. The Obama campaign is desperate for you to think of both nominees as George Bush clones. He’s had all year to widen the gap between himself and John McCain and he’s failed miserably even though he’s had truckloads more money then McCain, far more media coverage than Johnny Mac, a galaxy of adoring media figures and a mostly open field. Still, the race is pretty much dead even because he can’t seem to step away from a teleprompter without saying something unutterably stupid.
So, he’s hoping that he can turn up the Bush-hatred just enough to squeak over the finish line. That’s the same strategy John Kerry used four years ago and we know how well that turned out for him.

You've missed the point. We all know most politicians don't write their speeches, and that is not the point of BO's rebuttal. The emphasis is on the sameness of Palin and GWB's speeches, and consequently their politics. Equating McCain to Bush is nothing new, and now Palin is being included.
Isn't it interesting that the worst insult Obama dishes out is that the target is "like Bush"?
Stumbled across this site when I was looking for videos of GOP speeches from the recent convention. I'm on my way to find more, but the speeches I've seen so far made me wonder and worry about the Republican outlook on energy. I'm of the opinion that clean energy sources are more of a long term solution than drilling in Alaska. Do the Republicans have any plans to support clean energy? This could be research spending, it could be tax incentives to energy companies… anything? It seems to be all oil and coal as far as I can gather.
i'm glad he didn't stoop and respond by getting dirty. the camp merely points out that America is tired of divisive politics. The only one who enjoy a speech like that feed off of division and hatred. Bush style politics that sucked America into an obscene foreign policy fiasco. Here's hoping we don't fall for it again.
It IS about the issues. not about these superficial narrative stories.
So is he saying "yeah, well…she gives a great speech." Have they leveled a single original charge against our candidates yet or are his 2,400 campaign employees just going to copy the Republican's strategery?
Oh, and it is not really a "Bush speech" unless we get at least one new English word out of the deal….LOL
Lori
Shame on Obama, Shame on the media, particularly CNN; whats the name of Obama and all the democrats speechwriter? or do they want to claim that Obama doesn't have one. American I think are tied of the Obama strategy of relating Mc Cain with Bush. (even Palin now). Obama its not working, change strategy.
Just a candid advice.
Brandon, yes they do. However, most conservatives understand as a matter of practicality, that the most immediate solution to most of our energy needs involves domestic drilling. That's just a fact of life.
Deep Thinking – The strategy, as I note, didn't work for John Kerry when he actually was running against George Bush. It's not going to work for Obama, mostly because it's not very much.
I think he shouldn't feed into her attacks. Advice to Pallin, woman to woman, if you are going to throw mud you gonna get dirty. Come on, as a 'mommy' you should be teaching your children this instead of hearing it from the American public.
Man to woman, des, you should remember who started the mud-throwing. And your man really does need to get some better taunts. Maybe he can hire a fourth-grader. If money's a problem, I'm sure that one of his money men who haven't gone to jail yet can come up with some for him.
I thoroughly enjoyed some of the speeches last night. It would be great if candidates would go into great detail of what there positions are, but the convention is more of a rally time rather than a debate. I think Obama’s juggler has been exposed and McCain should strike while the iron is hot. McCain should once again explain his position on the issues. I am trying to give democrats a chance, but I think democrats love to sit on idol until someone else makes a decision that works and then jump on board with it, A.K.A “Bandwagon Fans.” What is this “Change” Obama wants to bring. America doesn’t know, he doesn’t know and he won’t know until the “Wagon” comes by to pick him up. The only “Change” he is bringing is his own story.
Let's review…
Barack thinks I am a bitter racist, clinging to my guns & Bible; resistant to "change" and more recently, that I “take pride in being ignorant”. And he says he is embarrassed by me because I don't speak Spanish or French and probably also because I just see myself as a US citizen only. Not a world citizen like he is.
Michelle Obama accuses me of being a divisive, gay-hating, slothful, uncaring/uninvolved, complacent cynic who is just down-right mean. She also thinks my soul is broken & Barack is the only one who can fix it; because apparently I don't have any sense of how to take care of “the least of these” in our society.
They both sat in a church listening to a pastor hurl one insult after another about ordinary (and unsuspecting) Americans; accusing me & my "greed” of “running a world in need" (among many other nefarious activities they attributed to white people people "of privilege".) A point Barack agreed with enough to include in one of his books.
So if it seems to you, DeepThinker, like Barack is not dishing out worse insults, you really haven't been paying attention.
(Edited at the poster's request)
nyah? – Is this country really tired of divisive politics, or is that just something the Democratic Party says that you assume is true? Our country was founded on the principle that politics would be divisive; hence the "two party" government. Poll after poll show that negative campaign ads work very well.
Me, I want divisive politics. I've seen what happens when humans all march to the same politics. So have a lot of Democrats, since they inspired that sort of government.
Maybe he kept his answer short because Sarah and the Republicans might play the "Sexist Card".
I just need to say the Republican party should have just plain come out and say we are racist because thats what I have been getting out of the speeches I have heard they have been just tip toeing through the tulips just say what you really mean. The Democrates that have switched parties it is because they still beleive in white america but those days are over there is a new generation. If people think George Boy did'nt mess up the economy I need to know where they have been. Its all about the OIL and keeping his family and friends in control of the oil industry.
Nonsense, HURDK1. Pure, idiotic nonsense.
you republicans are too stupid to understand the reality and the facts we want to ear about economy, education, health. you guys will feel the defeat on november.
If you think so, kevin, get behind Barack Obama. Just don't look too closely at his policies, though because they'll look awfully familiar.
Jimmie are we in the negative or positive in our economy? I will stick with my opinion it is not nonsence. If you can rally on the mud slinging last night then I prove my point I did'nt hear about what change mccain/palin can contribute all I heard was negativity about the Democratic party and how can Palin run the country when she can't run her household how can I follow her lead? There are way to many skeletons and Im sure more to come If the skeletons were on the Democrate side it would not have been pushed under the rug.
HURDK1 – The last quarters growth numbers were revised up to 3.3 percent, which is an incraese over the last quarter, which was an increase in the quarter over that. Oil prices have been steadily falling and the dollar has been rallying.
The answer, clearly, is positive. That's just the way it is.
Sara Palin's speach was without a doubt AWFUL. The Republican Party only knows one way to battle and thats with "FEAR" tactics. Which will not work this time. Barack is a man of integrity and will be a leader with integrity which is something our nation has not had for some time now. I believe without a doubt that the Hillary Clinton supporters are stepping up to support Obama. Palin will only seal the deal for Obama and Biden. I say let the under experienced HockeyMom keep talking.
I am sick to death of the hate mongering Republicans have been dishing out. Last night took the cake. I wanted to vomit the entire time, especially during Giuliani's speech. Hope I spelled his name wrong. Where does he get his facts? Please tell me when and where Obama said he wished to "increase terrorists"??
And Palin – as a woman I wanted to get to know you beyond the news reports. I was disappointed in what I saw. Your "experience" involves a state population and budget less than that of the average mid-size American mainland city. You really think she makes all the decisions in that government? Please.
Also as a woman I am appalled that she believes in erasing the rights our ancestors have fought so hard to gain. It is fine if she doesn't believe in abortion – no one is asking her to have (or have had) one. She should show the same consideration for others.
Has anyone read up recently on how little drilling in Alaska will actually provide for us? Read up people. If you don't want people to label you as ignorant then don't act it. Oh, and speaking of flip flopping. Hasn't McSame always been against drilling? Well, at least until he chose Palin in the 11th hour?
Call me cynical, but I am not stupid enough to believe that wasn't orchestrated as soon as Obama chosen Biden and didn't choose Clinton. Deep down thinking a woman will always vote for a woman no matter what the views? Ish, I hope not.
Ah yes, I am a previous resident of the state of Arizona. Mr. McSame – what have you done for them lately?
THIS IS OBAMA'S ACTUALLY RESPONSE TO PALIN'S SPEECH…. SOMEONE GAVE SOME MISLEADING INFORMATION!!!!
"Last night, we witnessed Governor Sarah Palin give a good accounting of herself and her background in her introduction to the nation at the RNC. Unfortunately, her speech contained about 18 seperate misleading statements and outright lies that our campaign must point out. Now, we don't blame Ms. Palin much for these errors. After all, this speech was written by others for her to read on the teleprompter, unlike Barack Obama's acceptance speech as well as his other speeches which he personally writes himself."
"Among the misleading statements in Ms. Palin's speech were the following:
* Claiming to be against the "Bridge to Nowhere" when she actively campaigned for it as mayor and while running for governor.
* Failing to point out that even after the Bridge to Nowhere was cancelled, she gladly kept the federal funds allocated for it in her state's coffers.
* Denigrating Senator Obama's work as a community organizer, falsely claiming that he wasn't responsible for anything. Clearly, Ms. Palin doesn't understand what organizers do and are responsible for in helping the lives of struggling families in economically hard hit communities like South Chicago where Obama worked successfully in making a difference.
* Falsely stating that Senator Obama's tax plan will "raise our taxes", when in fact his publshed plan will lower taxes for 95% of taxpayers, and the amount of the cut it far greater than proposed by Senator McCain.
* Falsely stating that Senator Obama hasn't given a plan on what he will accomplish. All of Obama's plans are described on barackobama.com, and every dime has been identified to pay for his plans.
* Taking a cheap shot by inference at Senator Obama's wife Michelle's patriotism when stating her own pride in her country. Neither party has a corner on patriotism, and Michelle has strongly expressed love for her country.
We have a dozen other falsehoods or half-truths from Ms. Palin's speech on our web site. Suffice it to say, Governor Palin stuck to the tired old GOP playbook of negative, slash and burn politics that has gotten us nowhere in Washington these past eight years. Far from being reformers, both Governor Palin and Senator McCain represent the Bush/Cheney positions on almost every issue. They haven't worked for America the past eight years, and we can't afford another four years of the same. Both Senator Biden and Senator Obama look forward to debating with Governor Palin and Senator McCain in the coming weeks to spell out the clear choice that America will have this November."
Jimmie, just saw your pics and now I understand why you're so angry.
HURDK1 – the problem with your point of view is first that you are comparing OBAMA and PALIN … you need to compare OBAMA and MCCAIN for PRESIDENT, and BIDEN and PALIN for VICE PRESIDENT! And as for the economy, check your numbers again, for Q1 and Q2 2008, they were BOTH POSITIVE! True, they were smaller positives than we would like, but hey, it is not a dang recession. A "recession" requires two, back-to-back, quarters of NEGATIVE growth in the economy. If you need more information on the definition of "recession" please look it up.
Brandon – Listen to the entire speech that Palin gave last night, one of her lines was:
"Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines … build more nuclear plants … create jobs with clean coal … and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources."
Please find the video for yourself if you need to, but they are talking about Energy Independence. If you can locate what Obama ACUTALLY plans to do about energy, (other than the "properly inflate your tires and we can save as much energy as they are talking about getting by drilling") I would LOVE to read it.
For my own point of view, I believe that the scrutiny that Sarah Palin has come up against in the media is exactly what we need. I think we do need to know every little detail about McCain and Palin. I want more information to come out. BUT! I ALSO think the media would be a lot better off if they would show the SAME due-diligence in regards to Obama and Biden. I am not impressed by the way the media keeps skirting around and avoiding tough questions of Obama, but have no problem at all attacking Palin and her entire family. We want FAIR coverage and equal research on BOTH candidates, but we simply are not going to get that from ABC, NBC, or CNN. They are going to dig up anything and everything they possibly can on McCainPalin and give ObamaBiden a completely free ride. Shameful that the media cannot just report on the candidate and leave their personal opinions out of it. If I want personal opinions, I will listen to Limbaugh or Hannity, but when I want NEWS COVERAGE, I want it to be completely unbiased and truly equal. That won't happen, but it would be nice.
*steps down from soap box*
Oh look. The intelligent left has come to play!
So are you for or against womens' rights today, guys? Want to have a little experience debate? Or it is just the normal substanceless name-calling as usual?
Wow, substanceless name-calling and debates. I say leave that to the Republican Party, they're so much better at it. And while were at it, lets add in some fear mongering to this recipe for disaster. The Republican Party up to and including Bush, McCain and Palin are PATHETIC
C'mon. Get specific. I certainly have been.
Why do you have to make a personal attack? Is this grade school?
Get ready to step back up. I'm sure you must watch Fox News, they have plenty to say and ask about Obama. Don't forget, he has been campaigning for 19 months to Palins 5 days. How soon the mighty forget….
Jimmie – who exactly are you calling out?
Jimmie – if you were speaking to me, then this is for you. Yes, I am not only a believer and supporter of womens' rights, I believe and support HUMAN rights. And of course the rights I have as an American citizen although the current administration would prefer I forget about those old trivialities.
Our ancestors, you have got to be kidding. Do you think they had legalized baby killing in the 1800's?????
You have to make personal attacks when you have nothing to say and no argument. What can McCain say. He's for a WAR that shouldn't be. He's ignorant to financial matters. He's running on 40 year old war stories. The bottom line is our nation needs a new approach. McCain is not capable of giving it to us. Palin is a pawn and she is not capable of running this country should McCain drop dead. She was put on this ticket as a distraction. Women across america should be insulted by this Republican chess move.
Thanks Rod
It is true that McCain seems stuck in another time. I do tire of hearing his campaign call Obama an elitist when he is the one living the elite life. I felt the same watching Rudy. There is not a day that goes by I don't think (as well as all of us) of 9/11. However, it doesn't mean that should dictate our future. I am much more concerned about Americans losing their homes every day, how much more it costs me to live every day, and when Katrina victims will get to move out of those disgusting third world FEMA trailers than I am about a terrorist attack. Fear mongering is so 4 years ago!
Thanks again Rod, all the women I know ARE insulted and will be taking that to the voting booths and appreciate those who recognize it for what it is!
Rod, you say that the war should not be but clearly there are a sizeable number of Americans and 20 million or so Iraqis who believe otherwise.
Waht in Palin's contrarian history gives you reason to believe she's anyone's pawn? Was it when she took on and beat a sitting entrenched Republican governor? Was it when she started cleaning out a corrupt political machine in her state? Was it when she actually got oil companies to agree to a tax system that raised their taxes when oil prices in Alaska increased? Of whom, exactly, is she a pawn?
TC – You can make exactly the same argument against Obama that you made against McCain. What in Obama's history indicates that he's anything but a run of the mill politician?
No SR, I am not kidding. There are many reasons a woman may have for terminating a pregnancy. Yes, some may use them as a method of birth control. I don't condone that, but it is not my decision to make. Do you understand that? Not mine or yours or legislators decision to make. Stay off my grass and I'll stay off yours. Pun intended thank you very much.
Legalized baby killing? Hmm, wonder what side of the fence you are on. So funny that those who scream loudest about "baby killing" are often the same ones who don't give a @$&% about going out to hunt for sport. Especially my favorites, those high level executives in the South especially who go to hunting "farms" to make a kill so that they can have their picture taken. Then they want it tossed aside. Most of those same folks often don't have the balls to kill the animal themselves, they have one of the yes-men do the killing. Don't want to get their hands dirty. And before anyone attacks, I have seen this so I'm not talking heresay. Oh, and SR I am certainly not saying this is something you do or condone. Just made a nice tie-in.
Hypocrisy is best served on ice.
Well Jimmie, my shout out to McCain is just a question. I lived there in Arizona and I just don't remember him doing anything for Arizona. I'd like for him to remind me.
Also SR – it has been reported and not disputed that she does not believe in equal work for equal pay. Our ancestors fought and worked towards equality of all kinds for women. It's not always about abortion.
High-level executives that go out to farms & make their low-level yes-man shoot the animal, just so they can get their picture taken with the dead animal??? Dang dirrty southern executives!&@*%
Will you send me the PETA brochure where you got this information? I live in the South and I'd like to take it and confront some high-level southern executives and let them know we know the truth behind those dead-animal photos in sitting on their desks.
I was disappointed with Palin and how she seemed to exploit her family during her speech after whining that we need to leave her family alone and that they have nothing to do with her ability to be VP. There were many things she's done and said that seem hypocrytical. How can she tell us to respect her daughters decision regarding her recent pregnancy when she does not want to give Americans the right to even make their own decision regarding their unborn children? What kind of woman is anti-women's rights?
Well Cheesestick it wasn't from a PETA brochure as I am not a member of PETA nor a vegetarian. It is factual information from an actual hunting club/farm/retreat that is unfortunately owned by a family member.
Cobi, that's a pretty thin couple of talking point you're parroting there. Let me ask you, would you have been upset if various bloggers and media outlets started tearing through Obama's children after he used them on campaign trips. Remember, here, Obama's not on your side on this issue. Is he also a hypocrite?
I require evidence of this. I've seen this charge before and it's been well-refuted. Where do you get your information?
Jimmie, it is one thing to have your children on the campaign trail. There is nothing wrong with that. There is another thing when the media or people make malicious statements about your children. I think the point Cobi is making is that one minute Palin wants the public to leave her family alone and the next she is speaking freely about them and the issues she doesn't want anyone to comment on. Both parties have said that family attacks should be off limits.
Unfortunately, her family has some things that create attention. I'm sure if there was something attention grabbing about Obama's children the forces would be all over it.
Jimmy,
It may be fun, sort of like mud wrestling, but the winner of the election has to become president of all,and will hopefully have some credibility and dignity. With the lies and name calling, there are bitter (there goes that word that gets Obama in trouble) feelings that will be hard to heal. Partisanship hurts the country. Nothing gets done. We are a nation of them and us, almost evenly divided using all our energy to oppose one another. What a waste!
These candidates are spending millions of dollars, some of it public money, to spread lies. And what gets lost are the issues. The media show and stories are so compelling, we forget about the real issues to our detriment.
Whatever happened to civility? Is it just too boring for the 21st century?
Jimmie, I pointedly used the words "reported" and "not disputed". I have not seen anything on any of the news channels (yes I watch them all) disputing that statement I heard.
Well,
I guess you miss the point scare tactics will not get you elected this time. Issues will! Other than trying to tell us why one senator is not qualified as both are. Neither has any exucutive eeperience. Tell us what you are going to stand for other than hipocracy. Jobs, Health the economy in general?
Jimmie, I'm sorry you cant see the forest for the trees. McCain is no different from Bush. If he was, he would clearly have something to say other than I'm a war hero and I was a POW. You can critisize Obama all you want. The ideas are fresh and different and cant be any worse than this crap were dealing with now. I saw 20,000 americans on TV last night clapping for Guilani (sp?). When you show me the weapons of Mass Distruction which was the lie told to americans to enter into this SENSELESS war with iraq, then I'll believe it. Also, check the facts regarding the Haliburton subcompany inwhich the CEO was just convicted yesterday by his own admission, for giving 180 million in bribes for drilling purposes.
Palin is a pawn for the simple reason that she has ZERO experience. Deploying guards to put out a fire is not the same as deploying troops. Curruption is another story. I'm still waiting the results of her attempting to fire her x-brother-n-law. After hearing her tirade last night. I'm more convinced than ever, she played a part in throwing her weight around in Alaska. I'm certain the Republican have there foot soldiers on the ground trying to convolute and cover up the details.
Cobi, I can appreciate at your comment above regarding Palin exploiting her family. However, lets not forget where it started. She's being exploited, so her family is just going along for the ride. I believe she honestly was proud and simply introducing her family to american. McCain and his army of desperate old men are the ones exploiting her. She's just the puppet
