Bristol Palin Must Pay, Says the Progressive Inquisition

Y’know, for a group of folks who so decry the so-called Religious Right, progressives sure know how to run an Inquisition. Dig this quote from an Obama supporter.

“But the Republican party has consistently used the religious right to say ‘we’re Christians,’ to say ‘we don’t believe in this and we don’t believe in that.’ And so I think they have to be held accountable…. She has to be held accountable.”

Vengeance. Judgement. Punishment.

Bristol Palin must suffer, not only for her sins but also for the collective sins of her family, the Republican party, and for every one of us who believe we have the right to use the word “immoral” in public. They take out their anger on a 17 year-old pregnant girl because they dare not take out their anger on the people at whom they are really angry.

The girl must pay. She must be punished. Burn her.

This isn’t about Republican “hypocrisy”. It’s not about the bogeyman hiding under their beds they call the Religious Right. This isn’t about Bristol or Sarah Palin at all.

It’s about a deep and abiding hatred for religion in any form. Religion is anathema to the progressive agenda and the faster it is chased from public life, the faster we can get on with worshiping the state and idolizing those who run it.

The fact is that Sarah Palin has barely mentioned her faith. Not a single person piling up the wood and toting the torches for Bristol right now have any idea what faith the Pailin family practices. they couldn’t tell you what church she attends without looking it up. I know that because I had to do that very thing. As it happens, Sarah Palin doesn’t belong to any organized religion.

Here is her acceptance speech, in video and transcript form. You won’t find a single mention of faith or religion in it beyond the closing sentence. Here’s a Time Magazine interview on Friday and the entire mention of her religion in the whole thing.

Where do you see yourself going? Staying on in Alaska. Washington?

You know, I don’t know. I knew early on that the smartest thing for me to do was to work hard, do the best that I can, make wise decisions based on good information in front of me. And then put my life, get myself on a path that could be dedicated to God and ask Him what I should next. That will be the position I will be in as long as I’m on earth — that is, seeking the right path that God would have laid out for me.

What’s your religion?

Any particular…?

No. Bible-believing Christian.

What church do you attend?

A non-denominational Bible church. I was baptized Catholic as a newborn and then my family started going to non-denominational churches throughout our life.

Sarah Palin isn’t some thundering moralist and neither is John McCain. And neither is today’s Republican Party. Most of the party is made up of people just like Palin. The horrible beast that scares Obama’s torch-bearing follower does not exist. It hasn’t existed for a very long time.

What exists are millions and millions of every day people who don’t believe that the state should be their God nor progressives their priests. They reject the notion that they are “godbags” or that they “cling” to their faith because they don’t know any better. They know very well that human beings can fail to live up to their own morals. They’re not stupid. But they also know that they can climb much higher than any leftist policy can lift them if they were just left well enough alone.

Progressives have no argument for that. They look on their social policies of the past and see only abject and repeated failure. Their frustration mounts. They can not be wrong, so the fault must be elsewhere. It must be the fault of those rubes who still believe in some ridiculous sky god. But they can’t very well say that out loud. Oh no. That would turn the rubes against them.

But they hate and they must punish someone for their failure. Someone must burn.

And in their blind malice, they’ve decided that a pregnant teenager whose name they didn’t even known before last Friday must be “held accountable”. Bristol Palin must pay not only for her sins but for the sins of every who, over the past decades, have failed to reject religion and recognize their leftist betters.

And they accuse us of being intolerant.
