Bristol Palin and the Deranged Progressive Left

| September 1, 2008 | Comments (12)

The tolerant left, always eager to show dignity to their fellow human beings, have now targeted Sarah Palin’s 17 year-old daughter as the newest target of their disgusting attention. The Palin family announced today that their oldest daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and that she and her boyfriend will soon be married. The announcement is an act that went well above any reasonable obligation they may have had, but they felt it necessary since the scurrilous and laughable rumor that Bristol actually is the mother of her youngest brother Trig came out. That particularly vile piece of work is so over the line that even Barack Obama has demanded that his people knock it off.

My own opinion, as a conservative and a Christian, is that I’m glad that Sarah Palin sees this child as a blessing and not as a mistake and a punishment. I would rather Bristol Palin not become a mother at 17, but no one asked me. She and her boyfriend have charted a course of action, her parents are foursquare behind her, so who am I to gainsay that. After all, that’s exactly the sort of formula that can produce great success. It will take hard work and devotion and love, but that’s the conservative way and it’s the way that Palin has lived her life.

Meanwhile, many folks on the right, some of whom you would consider not particularly sentimental, are rising to the defense of the Palin family.

Jeff Goldstein, who no one would take for a softy, jumps on progressives with both feet and makes too many good points for me to quote here. I will give you a bit, though.

That the Palin family — by dint of ugly rumor mongering from “progressive activists” and a compliant left-leaning press that was cynically situating itself to pretend that these rumors “needed investigating” — was all but compelled to release information about their teenage daughter, is precisely the kind of thing that drives real civil libertarians and privacy advocates crazy, especially because the information has nothing whatever to do with Governor Palin’s candidacy, but instead invades the privacy (and quite possibly effects the “choice”) of a minor.

Privacy only matters until the left wants to violate it. That’s because their violations of civil rights have good motives. They’re violating her rights for her own good, don’t you know. If that smells to you like some old-school fascism, you have a very good nose.

Meanwhile, Ace is finding himself filled with Palin joy and has noted that this weekend has been the biggest three days of traffic in his blog’s history. I can back up his observations with my own. Today (and my blog stats measure stats from 8 PM to the next 8 PM), The Shack recorded over 9,000 unique visitors. The closest I had ever come to that was sightly more than 5,000 on a Friday. My normal traffic fluctuates on a normal weekday between 350 and 600 visitors. Weekends drop off a bit because that’s when folks spend less time around their computers and also because I blog less on the weekends. I recorded 550 visitors yesterday (a Sunday). I’ve had over a thousand visitors three out of the past four days, over Labor Day weekend.

You don’t think that Sarah Palin was a great pick for John McCain? Dream on. The left is scared spitless of her and the right is ready to go to war to defend her.

I saved the best post for last. The Anchoress has been watching the Palin hate being vented by the left and is simply aghast. She thinks that what we’ve seen since Friday has surpassed any Bush-hatred we’ve seen in the past eight years. I think she’s right. The meltdown over the 2000 election, the Iraq War, or any supposed scandal the left has “uncovered” has been a mild fit of pique compared to the venom I’ve seen in the past three days. There’s something about Sarah Palin and her family that has hit a very raw progressive nerve. Perhaps it’s that her family is not only normal but incredibly happy and in love with each other. Perhaps it’s that Palin has been successful at politics without building her entire life around it. Perhaps it’s that Palin has lived her convictions with grace and a notable lack of pretension. Perhaps it’s that after three days, no one has managed to find pictures of Sarah Palin naked or Sarah Palin in a bikini. I honestly don’t know which of these (or even if all of them) have plucked that tender spot that’s caused this temper tantrum. I do know that Palin and her family will need our support and I share The Anchoress’ hope that they are as strong as they seem.

im curious…does a public person have a right to privacy…if so, then why was john edwards, who was no longer a candidate for anything not provided that right?

and if you choose to read the blogs more closely, you will not only see numerous posts by people demanding that the rumor posts be removed, but many more who were questioning sarah palin…not bristol.

you are right…bristol should be left alone

and so should every woman who chooses to have or not have a baby

thanks for coming over from the dark side and joining the rest of the pro choice crowd

  2. Jimmie says:

Well, the difference between John Edwards and Sarah Palin is that Edwards made a big show of his morality and devotion to his wife. Sarah Palin has barely mentioned any religious belief and has not touted herself as an example of any family value.

    At all.

And I believe in choice as well. I just believe that unborn children are human beings deserving of basic human rights.

I'm glad Bristol will keep the baby.

I'm glad they told the truth instead of hiding Bristol until the election.

BUT… Sarah Palin will force her teenage daughter to marry, and this is because Bristol never got any sexual education. This is bad. Very bad.

I don't think God agrees with this. Hopefully.

"The left is scared spitless of her"

I think at this point their biggest fear is that she'll be dropped from the ticket.

Bill – Unfortunately, your view of the situation does not match the facts of the situation. Criticize freely, but don't make things up.

I would suggest that the issue here — the one which should be addressed — is that Mrs. Palin believes in a policy of Abstinence only sex education.

Does she feel this is an effective method for preventing teen pregnancy?

  8. Jimmie says:

Then address the issue without bringing her juvenile daughter into it. Address the issue on the merits.

You people on the left are delusional idiots. I mean, to hear you tell it, abstinence-only training means that girls simply won't know where babies come from and will innocently enough get herself pregnant because she was denied information.

For the record, I knew where babies came from by the time I was 8…and that was before cable TV and Internet were even around. My parents taught me the basics. And back in the day, you could pretty much piece together your own sex education by simply using the dictionary and/or encyclopedia and whatever info older kids you knew could tell you. And maybe none of you have picked up a copy of Teen magazine, Young Miss, Seventeen, Glamour or Cosmopolitan lately? Neither have I, but 20-30 years ago, these mags were loaded with info about birth control options, pregnancy & STD's and I doubt much has changed….I'm sure they haven't gone backwards.

The only reason why abstinence-only training even came to be was because progressives were forcing The “Joy of Sex” on kids and calling it sex education. Personally, I think the perverts in the schools and in the teachers' unions should be relegated to teaching math, reading/writing, history, science, etc. In many of these areas, they have proven themselves to be complete incompetents; yet the left wants to turn over the teaching of morality as well.

    >>I would suggest that the issue here — the one which should be addressed — is that Mrs. Palin believes in a policy of Abstinence only sex education.>>

No,that's not correct. Mrs.Palin objects to "explicit" sex education. I'm not sure exactly what this means – whether it's a reference to teaching homosexual sexuality or using sex ed as a "how to" class. She also objects to schools giving out contraceptives.

    >>Does she feel this is an effective method for preventing teen pregnancy?>>

How long have we had sex education in the schools? Have illegitimate births/pregnancies gone up or down in that period??

You'd have to be about 10 years old to think that knowing the facts of life would make any difference to a teenager when the hormones take over! Anyone over the age of 10 knows that there are times when the facts just go out the window. Sad but true.

How about education about drinking and driving? Who doesn't know that it's a bad idea? Yet some 6000 teens die in drinking/driving accidents every year. Teens are idiots. With any luck, they'll outgrow it.

  11. Rob says:

This is laughable. Force her daughter to marry? How about support her daughter's decision to marry. Not that we will know but she probably would have supported her daughter's decision to not marry if that was her choice. Funny how it is a choice to abort but not a choice to decide to give birth and maybe marry. I think you may be on the dark side.
