My McCain Veep Conjecture: I Want Palin
I haven’t made much of a secret about who I’d want to see John McCain pick at his running mate. I think Sarah Palin is a compelling choice for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that her biggest weakness is one that Barack Obama can not attack without opening himself up a counterattack that hits even harder. Yes, Palin has only served as Governor of Alaska for not quite two years. That’s exactly one year long than Barack Obama served as a US Senator before launching his campaign and if half the country can accept him, they sure as heck can accept her. In Palin’s two years as governor, she’s already had more accomplishments than Obama has in his Senate time as well. It would be extremely unwise for Obama’s campaign to bring up the inexperience issue.
That said, there are rumors floating around that neither Mitt Romney nor Tim Pawlenty will be in Dayton today when John McCain makes his announcement. Of course, Palin’s people said that she wouldn’t be there either. Apaprently, if you’re a governor, you have a state fair to attend today. Joe Lieberman and Tom Ridge are still in the mix, though and, given John McCain’s predeliction for sticking a knife into the back of conservatives whenever he can, both of these guys are still very much in the mix even though Robert McCain has heard differently about Lieberman this morning.
I want to see him pick Palin. She’d bring a lot of good things to his campaign and very few bad. She’s a notable warrior against government corruption whose not been afraid to buck the entrenched powers in her party. She’s in favor of increased domestic drilling. She holds to at least the big conservative beliefs, which will help offset McCain’s left-leaning past on free speech, immigration, and taxes. She’s a solid pick and I think she’ll help from the first day she’s on the ticket.
I’ll be interested to see who he actually picks. His campaign deserves a lot of credit. It’s thrown out enough chaff that you could build a credible case, based on media reports, for a half-dozen different people. That’s good rumor control.
