Russians Bluster and Bull***t on Our Op-Ed Pages

The Russian government has sent forth two mouthpieces to try to sway American public opinion this week. Mikhail Gorbachev has an op-ed in the New York Times wherein he said that Russia was just minding its own business in South Ossetia when the wicked Georgians shelled the city and forced them to act to save thousands of civilians.

It sounds good, but it is not true. The Moscow Times reported that human rights activists were “struggling” to find a hundred. The Los Angeles Times reported two days ago that the hospital in Tshkinvali had recorded only 40 dead.

What Gorbachev does not tell you is that the Russian government has been agitating South Ossetia for about 15 years now. Their latest trick was to issue huge numbers of Russian passports to South Ossetians who still lived in the territory. Then Russian could claim them as Russians when the inevitable hostilities broke out. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. The overreach, the hostility, the provocations have come from the Russian side. I can not blame Georgia for taking military action. At some point Georgia was going to have to either fight for its territory or simply give it away to Russia. Let’s be clear, though. Russia wanted this fight. They are the ones that pushed for it. They are the ones who shld be severely punished. And Mikhail Gorbachev needs to sit down and hold his lying tongue.

I will give him some credit, though. He is more measured than Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who bluntly says in the Wall Street Journal that “America Must Choose Between Georgia and Russia”. He tells the same lies at Gorbachev and omits the same damning facts. His op-ed is alternately puling and blustering and it’s worth less than the time it took to publish it. However, I am sure that some dupes out there will read it and think “Awwww…poor beset-upon Russians”. Those would be the same kinds of folks who during the Cold War were known as “useful idiots”. Lavrov and Gorbachev are hoping that they will be useful to them once more.

Just plain idiots. Good grief I'm amazed how stupid people can be. This situation is going from bad to worse very fast. I know it will too much to expect any help from the euro-weenies.
