Watching the Candidates Play “Wheel of Vice Presidents”

| August 19, 2008 | Comments (1)

Both campaigns have been leaking word that their choice of VP is imminent, which means the gamesmanship has begun. Pundits are reading so many tea leaves that farmers in China and Ceylon have gone on full Red Alert to keep them supplied and there are so many names in the mix that, right now, you might as well trow a bunch of names into a Lotto machine and make your pick that way.

That said, there are a couple folks who I think have a pretty clear read on things. Robert McCain has been drilling through the haze and is pretty dismissive of the current Joe Biden craze among rabid Obama supporters. I agree with him. The Obama campaign doesn’t need another self-loving, camera hungry gaffe machine. He’s jumping up and down yelling “Tim Kaine” at the top of his lungs in the hope that someone will listen.

Well, I’m hearing him and agreeing with him. Virginia is going to be in play big-time come November and Kaine would go a long way toward nailing down the leftist enclaves in Northern Virginia who aren’t quite part of the Obama Cult yet. Kaine’s big disadvantage is that he’s only slightly more experienced than Obama (which is to say he’s actually done something in his time in political office and has managed to win a contested election) but it hasn’t been a big problem for him in Virginia thus far.

On the Republicans side, there’s nothing good for conservatives. Michelle Malkin has been watching how the McCain campaign has been feeling out conservatives on how they’d react to another pro-choice candidate on the ticket and is bracing for another political slap to the chops.

Is it possible that Johnny Mac will just toss conservatives over the side and go with a pro-choice, open borders proponent like Rudy Giuliani? This is John McCain we’re talking about here so of course it’s not just possible, but pretty darned likely.

At this point, the most conservative person on McCain’s list, plausibly, is Tim Pawlenty which isn’t saying a whole lot. McCain’s inner circle has been systematically purging the campaign of any conservative influence (with Phil Gramm being the most recognizable example). Floating the names of Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal was a good move to keep conservatives interested, but I’m afraid that’s all it was. John McCain won’t pick a movement conservative any more than he’d flap his arms and fly to his next campaign stop.
