Barack, Back from Vacation, Mud in Hand

I couldn’t help but notice a pair of stories that came out yesterday and this morning, hard on the heels of Barack’s Obama’s drubbing at Saddleback Church. The headline to the first story is “Vacation over, Obama in fighting form” and the second one is headlined “Obama sharpens the message” (the latter via memeorandum).

The gist of both stories is that Barack Obama has come back from a restful vacation full of vigor and ready to fight back against the foul personal attacks launched by the grumpy old John McCain.

So what attacks has the Obama campaign launched since he’s been back? First, he’s floated the rumor, picked up eagerly by the MSM, that McCain cheated during the Saddleback forum. Now, he’s accusing John McCain of making up long-substantiated “cross in the dirt” story that McCain has been using as an illustration of his personal faith since the early 70s (via Mark Hemingway).

I guess you could call that vigorous. You could just as easily say that he completely whiffed on Russia’s invasion of Georgia and slacked off on his forum prep while frolicking on a Hawaiian beach and came back needing something to give him some political breathing room.

What I’m wondering is what triggered the two stories about his re-invigoration in the first place? It is really news that Barack Obama’s back from Hawaii ready to get back on the trail? Maybe. It seems a lot more newsworthy that he came back, got his ass kicked in a reasonably friendly forum where he was given an explicit advantage over his opponent, and responded by floating not one but two pretty scurrilous smears to divert attention from the beat down he received.

But I don’t think I’ll be seeing a story like that in Time Magazine, which published a tongue-bath of a cover story by Obama backer Joe Klein two years ago and has been in his hip pocket ever since.

You know, I've been a subscriber to Time for years and it really is a very good magazine in so many ways. I have but one grudge with them, and that is the Obama brown-nosing. Which is why I very much enjoyed the Onion piece linked below, which is great satire because it might just as well be true:
