Pelosi’s Bad Bait (UPDATE: The Washington Post Delivers an Oil Hoax Smackdown that’s Mostly Right)

Nancy Pelosi has the hook baited and she’s hoping America will bite.

Today, she’s saying that she is willing to give the Republicans a vote on their domestic drilling plan, but with a whole raft of conditions. Their proposals also have to include all the things that Pelosi wants, incuding raiding the Strategic Reserve and handing out billions of government dollars to her fellow investors in Big Wind.

This is not a turnaround on her previous position. This is a pretty sad attempt at deception. What the Republicans and more and more Americans each day want is a straight up vote on releasing our domestic oil from the Congressional ban. No tricks. No shady deals. Just a yes or no vote.

That’s something that Pelosi will never grant because she will lose that battle. Instead, she’s trying to fool us into believing that she really has given in but don’t believe her. She’s just dangling a hook in your face hoping you are stupid enough to bite.

UPDATE: The Washington Post’s editorial today pokes a few tire gauge-sized holes in the reasoning emplyed by the left on energy. It’s a good thing to keep in your mental back pocket when you hear something like “But the oil companies aren’t drilling the leases they have!” in a whining leftist voice.

Just hand them this op-ed and wait for their brain to seize up.

The only problem I have with it is this little bit right at the beginning.

Contrary to the baldly political suggestions regarding lower gasoline prices by President Bush and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), drilling would make no impact on today’s pain at the pump because it would be years before any oil flowed from the Outer Continental Shelf.

Anyone who knows diddly about the futures market and what influence that can have on today’s prices knows that’s manifestly untrue. The editors of the Post, who I imagine all have preatty healthy investment portfolios ought to know this.

But I suppose I can’t expect the Post to turn its back completely on the anti-drilling crew.
