Russia Presses the Advantage, Captures Undisputed Georgian Territory.
So it’s come to this. The President of Georgia, on the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal, is reduced to practically begging us to help his nation as Russian tanks capture undisputed Georgian territory. Russia has delivered an ultimatum to the Georgian government and things are looking dire indeed for the survival of the country.
At the very least, Russia stands to gain the two so-called breakway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, over which they have had de facto control for some time. More importantly, it gains the undisputed strong hand over the entire region. If we allow Russia to get away with its aggression, if we allow Putin to escape this without a meaningful penalty, then there is no sane reason that the Ukraine or any other former Soviet satellite state can trust that we will back them up.
We will again be the country whose word can not be trusted and setting this betrayal right will take generations.

So very true. It is just heart breaking to see my country be so completely weak that it refuses to back up its ally.
Agreed Stoner….and soon enough, we won't have any.
We've known all along though that if we don't show strength & resolve in Afghanistan & Iraq that other countries will take advantage of that weakness. I realize Iraq is winding down. But the length of the war & lack of indisputable victory has allowed ample time for the leftest in this country to demonstrate repeatedly that we don't have the will to go to war and we will persecute & possibly prosecute the leaders (in our own country) who do.
