House Republicans Call “Ollie Ollie Oxen Free!”
By Jimmie on Aug 7, 2008 in Our New Democratic Overlords, The Republican Minority, Thinking About Energy
The Republicans in the House are racheting up the pressure on their Demcoratic colleagues. Earlier this week, Minority Leader Jim Boehner invited the Democrats who are for more domestic oil production to put their signatures on paper in support of getting a vote on the Republicans “all of the above” energy plan.
Today, he and the rest of the minority leadership invited those same Democrats to come off of their vacations, back to Washington, to join them in asking the recalcritant nancy Pelosi to allow a vote on their energy plan.
What puzzles me about this is that Pelosi and her cadre of obstructionists insist that they have the stronger argument. If that’s true, then there’s no harm at all in letting the Republican bills come up for a vote. After all, if they have the better argument and the strongest support, they’ll vote the bills down and be free to go back on vacation.
I’ve been pretty critical of the Republicans in the past, especially Jim Boehner and the rest of the leadership. The past two weeks, though, they’ve done exactly what I expect of them. They’ve gotten serious about fixing a problem that, for a change, is in their hands to help fix by reducing silly government regulations and promoting the entrepreneurial spirit that has always been an important part of this country’s foundations. I hope they keep up the pressure. Slowly but surely their message is making it to the American public. In time, there will be a breakthrough.
