It’s Partisan Power Keeping Your Gas Bill High

So the latest news from the Nancy Pelosi’s House of Fail is that she’s sending out word quietly to her fellow embattled Democrats that it’s okay if they want to break rank just a little bit to save their political hides.

How nice. That’s a fine, if not bog-standard play in the petty little chess game called partisan politics. For the rest of us out here in what she views as her own personal feifdom it’s not such a graet deal. See, it turns out that her opposition to domestic drilling isn’t based on any real conviction or facts or anything else on which responsible people who take their positions or authority base their decisions. Her great and guiding principle is power.

Pelosi’s gambit rests on one big assumption: that Democrats will own Washington after the election and will be able to craft a sweeping energy policy that is heavy on conservation and fuel alternatives while allowing for some new oil drilling. Democrats see no need to make major concessions on energy policy with a party poised to lose seats in both chambers in just three months — even if recess-averse Republicans continue to pound away on the issue.

“The reality is we will have a new president in three months, and what Bush and the Republicans are trying to do amounts to a land grab for the oil companies,” said one senior House Democratic aide involved with party strategy. “I don’t think we have to give in at all pre-election — we have many more options postelection.”

Pelosi’s “sweeping energy policy” is almost self-debunking. We’ve watched gas prices drop based greatly on public demand for more domestic production and Republican attempts to do the job they are paid to do. The rest of it is just standard democratic boilerplate about Republicans being in the pockets of big oil, yadda, yadda, yadda. That’s convenient talk considering that they don’t whip out their own gold card when they gas up the gas guzzling monster they drive to the Capitol every day. Nancy Pelosi doesn’t pick up the tab for the gas her plane uses while she jets around the country on a book tour. She can afford to wait things out. After all, she’s not paying the bills. She can show up on the occasional talk show and babble ten minutes of incoherent drivel punctuated with a few crocodile tears about how the American people are suffering. The truth is that she’s purposefully hiding the fact that any economic pain we feel now or in the future because of gas prices is due to her thirst for more and more power over your life.

You think that’s worth sending her back to the Speaker’s chair?
