A Fool and Our Money

| July 18, 2008 | Comments (0)

Robert McCain has taken a pook at the Obama campaign’s spending and is wondering what in the heck he’s doing. The campaign is spending $42 million a month and has an immense staff (and when I say immense, I mean, “never before seen in the history of Presidential elections by a long shot”).

And he’s going on a whirlwind tour of Europe, which robert says is sheer political insanity.

Look, ask any political operative about the manpower involved in organizing one — just one — campaign rally or fundraiser, stateside. The whole business of travel schedules, advance publicity, media arrangements, hotel bookings, stage set ups, sound and lighting — when a big campaign is on the road, the logistics of the operation are a never-ending headache that chews through the man hours.

OK, so now try to do this in six or seven countries, with five or six languages, all the customs hassles, etc. The very idea of draining such enormous amounts of money and manpower out of a presidential campaign, a month before the convention, in order to stage a 5-day publicity stunt — and that is all Obama’s foreign trip is — has to be viewed as what it is: a blunder of epic proportions.

Well, he is the Obamessiah after all. Perhaps he’ll just miracle his way through the whole thing.

Look, he can run his campaign any old way he wants. His contributors ponied up the cash and they don’t have much say in how it’s spent, at least not until they vote in November. That’s neither here nor there to me. What should be the real point of concern, and it seems to be where Robert is leading us, is that Barack Obama, should he win in November, is going to have control of a whole heck of a lot more money than he has now. And that money won’t be voluntarily contributed by Obama-lovers.

So if he can’t spend his money wisely now, how in the world can we expect him to spend our money wisely if he makes it to the Oval Office in January?

(By the way, I also kind of stole his headline and twisted it a bit. That’s some good creative blogging right there!)
