It’s a “War Crime” I Can Live With
Are you still a bit happy about that bold hostage rescue the Colombian government pulled off earlier this month? Does it make you smile when you think about the looks on the faces of the FARC honchos that were in that helicopter the moment they realized they were not surrounded by Che-loving friends?Well, Reuters says you shouldn’t be because Colombia has admitted to a war crime! That’ll teach you to be happy when the good guys win one.
Apparently, a member of the team that went in pulled some sort of shirt or jersey on that had a Red Cross emblem on it. According to the Geneva Conventions, that’s a no-no, because it could confuse another nation that obeys the rules of war and Red Cross personnel could be endangered because of it.
Assuming, of course, that FARC obeys the Geneva Conventions, which it doesn’t. If it had, the Colombian operation would not have been necessary. it’s also worth noting here that FARC is not a GC signatory, so Colombia isn’t bound to treat them as such. That’s a rule of war too, though most people conveniently forget it.
But the Red Cross and Reuters got their opportunity to sully Colombia’s triumph and to scold President Uribe, so they’re happy. Hooray for them.
