Free Speech? Not if You’re a Republican in Congress

To borrow a riff from Glenn Reynolds: They said that with George Bush as President, members of Congress would be muzzled and forced to communicate with their constituents only through approved channels and they were right!

It looks like Nancy Pelosi and Company, fresh from being scalded by insouciant conservative Congressman Thad McCotter on YouTube, are looking to clamp down on the rebellious minority by instituting some sort of People’s Glorious Speech Committee to approve who Congressmen talk to and how they talk to them.

Which should surprise no one at all.

The Anchoress is wondering what in the world has gone wrong?

Free speech, free exchange of ideas and the unencumbered dissemination of information is – or was – supposed to be a given, back then. It was understood to be the foundation of all of our rights, and the lifeblood of the nation.

I guess I was raised by different sorts of liberals.

No. She was raised by actual liberals, not progressives. Progressives are as far from classical liberalism as a piece of maggot-eaten meat is from a Filet Mignon. Control is their watchword and is has always been that way. From the earliest days when progressive pioneers as H.G. Wells (who coined the term “liberal fascism”) and Herbert Croly to Margaret Sanger and Thomas Dewey, the progressive movement has been about creating a new world where they decide what is best for you and your family, no matter what. That definitely involves restricting who gets to speak and what they are allowed to say.

Meanwhile, Thad McCotter has fired back, again on YouTube. His video is all Bob Dylan, but McCotter looks a whole lot like James Taylor, back in the day. It looks like the Republican party is managing to find its sense of humor, which is a very good thing. A politician without a sense of humor is a politician who takes themselves far too seriously to be trusted with power. Kind of like Nancy Pelosi.

You know what is happening, right? The Democrats are finally figuring out that their fellow travellers in the media & print news editorial boards will no longer be able to control the info we get by simply ignoring stories or letters to the editor that they don't like or agree with. (Took them long enough!) I know that Sen. Inhofe has delt their agenda a few blows by blogging about the faux global warming crisis. Probably a few others have as well. Can't have that now can we?
