Sure, You’re Really Sorry, But Can You Give Them Their Reputation Back?

This seems to me an inadequate apology.

“To the extent that this office has added to the distress suffered by the Ramsey family at any time or to any degree, I offer my deepest apology.”

That was the Boulder County (CO) District Attorney to the parents of Jon Benet Ramsey after a DNA test found conclusively that they had no involvement with their daughter’s murder. It seems to me that after treating the couple like cold-blooded killers for a few years, and doing very little to prevent the press from shredding them to tatters, the DA could be a lot more direct and repentant.

From what I saw of the case, which I admit was very little, the authorities never had a whole lot on the girl’s parents aside from “well, who else could have done it?”.
