Agent Zero, Still in the House
Gilbert Arenas is back in the fold. The Wizards signed him to a six-year deal worth $111 million. That’s less than the max contract Arenas had been talking about getting during the season, but it’s Gil’s doing that he signed a smaller contract. Apparently the team offered him the same number of years and $127 million but he took a lesser amount to give the Wizards a better shot at signing another player or two.
This signing comes after the team locked Antawn Jameson to a four-year deal worth about $50 million. The lone player that’s hanging out there unsigned right now is reserve shooting guard Roger Mason, Jr who had a career year last year. Mason’s made it know that he wants a more important role on the court next year and he’s being wooed already by a couple other teams. The Wizards may not be able to afford his asking price, even with the extra money they saved from Arenas’ contract. The biggest problem with Mason, though, is that they may not have room on the court for him with the guards they have on the team right now. Ernie Grunfeld may just have to let Mason go, as much as I’d not like to see it. That leaves them still needing another piece of the puzzle or two. One possibility is to sign James Posey, a small forward who can take some pressure off of Caron Butler. Butler took a real beating last season and Posey would be in many ways a “Tough Juice Light” with a bit more defensive skills. He can score and rebound and would at least keep the other team honest.
