Let’s Hope the Cuban Propaganda Machine is Right.

Oh, I very much hope this is true.

HAVANA (Reuters) – Cuba on Wednesday accused U.S. diplomats of escalating anti-government activities in recent weeks and said its ideological foe, the United States, will be held responsible for whatever happens if the actions continue.

The Foreign Ministry, in a statement published in state-run media, repeated charges from last month that the U.S. mission in Havana was providing direction and money to Cuban dissidents in violation of international diplomatic agreements.

It said there had since been an escalation of the activities that included anti-government acts in public places such as Havana’s Revolution Square and supposed plans for “provocative actions” on July 4, the U.S. day of independence.

I tend not to trust the propaganda ministries of Marxist regimes, but want this to be true. If it is, it means that the Bush administration has been playing things very smart in Cuba, keeping mostly quiet about the dictatorship while pumping money and advice to the dissidents so they can chew at the foundations of the Castros’ power even more.

I’ve no doubt that the Cuban government will be out in force on July 4th, if for no other reason than to claim later that it scared the running-dog lackeys of capitalism at bay. It’d be beyond delightful if on that day their efforts blew up in their faces thanks to some clever diplomacy from us and some incredible courage from the freedom-loving people of Cuba.

If it happens, it’ll mean that the American left’s two most beloved tyrants would suffer humiliations galore in the same week. How wonderful would that be?
