Man, I love it every time a bunch of filth terrorists and a tin pot dictator take one in the shorts. Colombia staged a daring raid today on the terrorist group FARC and rescued 15 hostages. Three of those hostages were Americans who were captured back in 2003 as well as former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt who had been held by the terrorists for over six years.

This is a huge victory for Colombia and her President, Alvaro Uribe. FARC had been demanding that Uribe swap the hostages, plus some 45 others for hundreds of FARC terrorist captured by Colombian authorities. Now, Uribe holds the upperhand.

And he doesn’t just have leverage on FARC but on the groups main sponsor, Hugo Chavez. Chavez made a big deal about being able to broker an agreement with FARC and had been intimately involved with funding and supporting the group. Now, Chavez has a weaker position with Colombia, and has suffered a humiliation that he will not soon erase. That’s an angle not being played up very much in the news reports about today’s raid, but it seems to me, potentially, a really big deal. Chavez has made a lot about his growing influence in South America. This cuts his knees out from underneath his aspirations. We ought to play that up a lot more.

This is really, really good news. Were I President Bush, I’d praise Uribe to the heavens right now and rub a little dirt in Chavez’ eye. I’d also name and shame the Democrats who rather publicly promoted Chavez and denigrated Uribe. It’s clear that Colombia is headed in the right direction (even though it has some way to go) and Uribe has the right people very angry with him. We need to get behind him as firmly as we can so he can capitalize on today’s big win.

    Go, Colombia!

Colombia leads the world in trade unionist assassinations, with 17 killings in the first three months of 2008 alone, and more than 400 during the 6-year administration of President Alvaro Uribe. Hardly any of the killers have been brought to justice.
Paramilitary groups – which are on the US list of terrorist organizations and are major drug traffickers – are responsible for much of the anti-union violence. The Colombian government claims the paramilitaries have demobilized, but it has yet to dismantle paramilitaries’ criminal structures, seize their illegal wealth, or ensure full investigations of their financial backers and support in the security forces and political system. Scores of new groups linked to the paramilitaries are operating all over the country.
