He's been under Secret Service protection for a while now. They're a bit twitchy about letting the people under their protection just hang out by a gas pump while the secured vehicle gasses up. Oh, and those vehicles usually don't just fill up at the neighborhood Amoco either. And, all the other candidates have exactly the same problem.
