The Election, Lonesome Dove Style
I’m not as much of a fan of Lonesome Dove as see-dubya, but his comparison between the hapless goer-along Jake Spoon and Barack Obama is a pretty good one. I’m reminded of a couple quotes from an older literary source on the subject of friends and associations.
Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
— Proverbs 22:24-25He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
— Proverbs 13:20
Not that I’m trying to be preachy, but there is a lot of wisdom in the book of Proverbs. I would have thought that Barack Obama would at least be a little familiar with these passages considering he spent the past 20 years as a relatively faithful and involved member of a church that ostebsibly uses the Bible. He also was very close personal friends with the pastor of that church who, one might think, would counsel a young man like Obama on the importance of choosing appropriate friends.
Then again, given the pastor, maybe not. I’m reminded of Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” In other words, you rub off on your friends and they on you. It’s more than fair to wonder how much Obama’s various friends and hangers-on have rubbed off on him the past couple decades. It seems that little of his public goodness and comity has rubbed off on them.
Where see-dubya’s analogy might not hold up is in the comparison between Gus McCrae, who not only knows the difference between right and wrong but is willing to hold the line between the two in the face of a sad but human rationalization, and the American voters who, increasingly, do not. At some point, we do need to consider whose company our candidates consider valuable.

Why Jimmie, I had no idea you were a COMMUNIST!
Yeah, yeah.
I'm more a Silverado and Tombstone kind of guy. And that more recent one with Robert Duvall and Lowell from Wings.
