Yes, Mr. Smith. Oregon is Blue.
Ben Smith has a bit of an article on Oregon Senator Gordon Smith who today unveiled a campaign ad for Barack Obama. Smith titled his post “Color Oregon Blue?”.
Yeah, we should color Oregon blue since it’s been that color for at least the past eight years. Oregon voted for Al Gore in 2000, John Kerry in 2004 and has only two Republicans out of eight members of Congress. We’re not exactly talking about a Republican enclave here, or even a coin-toss battleground state.
Smith, for his part, has been a vocal anti-war proponent who suggested that the President’s actions in Iraq might be criminal. He’s voted twice to withdraw troops from Iraq, both times trying to kill the “surge”. I think it’s safe to say that he’s not going to stick very close to the Republican caucus when it comes to fighting the Islamists. He seems to be of the same feather as the other addlepated fans of the “retreat and pray for mercy” war strategy. I’m not shocked to see that he’s smooching up to the Obamessiah’s voters even though Obama himself is openly endorsing his opponent. He’s playing the political game, trying to drive a wedge between Obama and his own Senate opponent. It’s not like he was going to endorse any Republican who wasn’t in favor of yanking the troops out of Iraq tout suite. It shouldn’t puzzle Smith at all that he’s just another Oregon Blue “moderate”.

I think that Oregon may well go for McCain. After several years of failed liberal politics in state government and obvious obstruction of democracy by our legislators, the people I talk to will nearly uniformly vote Republican. Smith probably won't need to worry too much about his seat, but Oregon may end up a resounding purple this time.
Oregon is a smelly hippy haven.
