First the local government overreacts, then the people offended by the overreaction take overreaction to a breathtaking height.
Just goes to demonstrate that we have way too many officious bureaucrats and thin-skinned ignorant whiners and woe betide us when they run into each other.

It is one thing to have a bake sale or covered dish/potluck meal at church where the crowd is for the most part, one big family and everyone knows that these dishes were brought from peoples' homes. But when you have people giving out 600 sandwiches to the public at a public event, there is no assurance that each person would be knowingly consenting to eating food that came from a strangers house rather than a restaurant that is regulated for public safety.
But either way, (and I'm probably going way over the PC line in saying this out loud), of any group of people that has proven their inability to take care of themselves without help from the government, it is this particular group that stands out. So IMO, they only have themselves to blame for the government being so big that they can have “officials” that can tell said group what they can & cannot eat. You can bet that if a bunch of people got sick from these sandwiches, these same people would be crying about why the white man didn't protect them from tainted sandwiches. This would also probably remind them of when slaves used to have to eat tainted food….so I don't feel sorry for them.
Besides, Texas is not known for taking bad food lightly. Exhibit A
