Canada, Home of “Happy Fascism”?

| June 19, 2008 | Comments (8)

Canada is making The Anchoress’ head explode today, for several pretty good reasons. If you want to see how rideiculous and, yes indeed, fascist*, our government could become if we keep walking the ridiculous road the nanny-staters have us on right now, just take a peek at the Great White North.

*I use that word not like MoveOn and the Bush-haters use it, which is to say, like a bunch of poo-flinging simians. I use it with a pretty good knowledge of what fascism is, where it came from, and what it’s looked like in the past.

If you're following Goldberg's usage, you're hopelessly incorrect.

Mussolini didn't use his power the way the Canadians are doing.

  2. Jimmie says:

Anyone who has leveled a serious criticism at Goldberg's book has not done so on his history. His sourcing is quite thorough. Il Duce did indeed use the power of the government to squelch free speech and to intimidate publications and newspapers. Government-enforced conformity of speech is a hallmark of fascism, and always has been.

Nobody has been made to do anything, yet, and probably won't.

  4. spoots says:

And Il Duce sure didn't use that power to defend a minority group.

  5. Jimmie says:

Again, spoots, you're wrong. At least one person has been enjoined from speaking on he subject of homosexuality forever. He was also forced to deliver an apology and, I believe, fined.

Minority groups do not require a governmental defense from speech. No one does. Such a defense is antithetical to free speech. As many very smart people in the field have said often times before today, the only proper defense against speech is more speech.

What Il Duce did was to bend the entire power of government toward enforcing a code of speech, which is exactly what Canada is doing. It should be repugnant to anyone who holds freedom dear.

    Who?

  7. Jimmie says:

    His name is Stephen Boissoin.

I will give one minor semi-correction. He can speak about homosexuality but he can never say anything that anyone might consider "disparaging". Given who he is and what he does, a reasonable person would consider that an effective speech ban on the subject for the rest of his life.

Unbelievable! I had not heard that story.

You know what is really stupid about these people? They are making people, who otherwise would not hate them, start to do just that. Their actions, which result from a militant belief in their own righteousnous, are actually spurring people to hate them.
