McCain Will Appoint Judges in the Mold of Who Again?

| June 16, 2008 | Comments (11)

Many of my fellow conservatives who are tenative John McCain supporters have told me that one of the two big reasons theyr’e behind him is his oft-made promise to appoint judges “in the mold of Chief Justice John Robert and Justice Samuel Alito”.

Perhaps they should hear what sweet nothings Johnny Mac is whispering in the ears of Hillary Clinton supporters.

“He stayed for a good almost half hour afterwards shaking hands, listening to our concerns, talking to us,” said [Party Unity My As] PUMA founder Will Bower, who said he thought many of the people there would vote for McCain.

…Bower said he’d liked McCain’s answer on judges, in which he “pointed out that he supported Bill Clinton with both Ginsberg and Breyer.”

Hmmm…might be nothing there. Then again, one could wonder which group’s vote is more valuable to Senator McCain. Would he rather have the votes of conservatives he’s spurned and openly antagonized at least the entire primary season knowing that he would have to compromise on some pretty fundamental policies to get that vote, or would he rather have the vote of center-left Clinton supporters with whom he would not have to compromise at all and whose vocal support would bring him the much-coveted titles of “Gap Bridger” and “Republican Maverick”? Which pair of judges do you think are most likely to uphold his beloved campaign finance reforms?

By the way, there’s no indication that his meeting with the PUMAs was off the record. McCain is no dummy. He knows these comments are going to get circulated. How else is he going to pick up Clinton supporters who aren’t PUMAteers? This story helps him greatly where he’s going to need a ton of help. It won’t hurt him a bit because conservatives are generally going to vote for him no matter what he says or does. Those lines have already been drawn and there aren’t many people who are straddling them.

So, there you go, my conservative McCain supporting friends. Figure it out for yourself. You can play his coy little hint to the PUMAs pretty much any way you want to. It’ll either matter to you or it won’t. I personally think this is his natural tendency and all his moldy Roberts and Alito promises are so much robotic repetitions. Then again, I’m pretty much done trying to convince you guys that you’re just an electoral roll in the hay to him and that come next January, he’s going to forget you even existed. You’re just going to have to find that out for yourselves. I hope he’s at least gentle with you.

Judges appointed by McCain will be a coin flip or maybe a roll of the dice. Judges appointed by Obama will not be, they will be radical leftist judicial supremacists. I know who and what McCain is. I will be voting for him anyway.

  2. Jimmie says:

Are you sure you know? It seems that until this morning we knew what sort of judges he'd appoint. Imagine what we'll know on January 21, 2009.

  3. martin says:

He is what he has always been. Self styled maverick. He hell do as he sees fit. He will attack republicans when he feels like it and suck up to democrats when that is what he wants. I have no illusion that he is conservative. Between the him and Obama I see only one difference and that is much more likely to handle Iraq in a manner that does not lead to our utter and complete defeat there. That is the only issue where they differ except by degree.

  4. Jimmie says:

Do you think that McCain is more or less predictable than Obama? I think Obama's a heck of a lot more predictable. He may be wrong about pretty much everything, but at least I know on what grounds I can oppose him and on what issues I'll have to fight.

As for Iraq, I'm not worried about Obama. There is no chance that he can do what he says he wants to do, no matter how much he promises the anti-war folks that he will. Indeed, Iraq may be on a track that he won't do anything to change at this point.

  5. martin says:

I agree with you on Obama being more predictable and easier to oppose. I am unsure how well the opposing will go for at least the first 2 years. The havoc his domestic policies will cause will be hard to fix. Also I would like to have at least a random chance of a good justice, even a "Sandra Day O'Conner good" justice.

On the war, I have been told by others that he won't be able to screw up Iraq that badly but I don't trust the arguments I get. I think they underestimate the belief that Obama has in himself. He has never faced a problem that words could not fix. He will get promises from people in Iran and elsewhere. He will abandon the Iraqi's that we have worked with to fates that I don't want to contemplate and he will do it quicker than is now easily imagined. They sent congressional Democrats to do a job that congress really can't do. To lose a war you need to be Commander in Chief.

I hope you are right and that the war will be so won by January that it will not matter. However, wars in the middle east often don't stay won.

I understand why people will not vote for McCain. I am not even particularly arguing that they should. I am only saying what I am going to do and my reasons.

  6. Basically John McCain cannot be trusted. I think he has Presidentialitis really bad and will say what he has to say to whomever he has to say it.

He reeks of distrust in his every action.

Having said that I must admit Obama is not just untrustworthy, the man is a boiling pot of deception. He is Jesse and Al in a new suit.

Once again conservatives are caught between a rock and the lesser of many evils.

  7. Frank Saxon says:

Martin, your living in a fools paradise.

  8. Jimmie says:

martin, I understand where you're coming from and to some extent I agree. I think I have more faith in the inexorable pull of certain events (like a real and honest alliance with a stable and liberal Iraq) than some others do.

That said, I also understand that at this point the choice for conservatives is between a leftist and a leftist who strays from the reservation on national defense. I don't think that's much of a choice, so I'm going to pass this time around. I certainly won't try to stop anyone else who wants to choose, though.

  9. Roy Mustang says:

    Well, let's see.

Liberal Bush 43 gave us Alito and Roberts.

Liberal-er Bush 41 gave us Thomas.

Conservative Reagan gave us Kennedy and O'Connor.

2 for 2. 1 for 2. And 1 for 3. Guess which President had the worst SCOTUS batting average?

  10. [...] McCain is not was not my favorite candidate for president. It was hard for me to support him. Besides how scary having Obama as president is, the only thing motivating me to support John McCain is his promise to appoint judges in the mold of Roberts and Alito. But now…how thin is this promise? Look what Jimmie at Sundries Shack found. [...]

  11. Will Bower says:

    Hey there, guys.

I'm the "Will Bower" mentioned in this article.

McCain said a *great* deal more about the issue of Supreme Court justices than this article implies.

If you'd like to know the full story, please feel free to contact me through the media page at JustSayNoDeal.com.

    Thank you,

    Will Bower
