Oh, Gilbert, It’s too Early.
This is not a good move for Gilbert Arenas. He has decided to opt out of the final year of his contract and go for something called a “max contract”. Right now, he stands to make $12.6 million. A max contract would go for six years and bring somewhere around 120 million.
The problem is that, right now, I’m not sure he’s worth the long-term risk. If the Wizards were smart, they wouldn’t be certain of that either. Gilbert is coming off of two knee injuries, the last of which sidelined him for almost the entire season. No one, not Gilbert and not Ernie Grunfeld and the Wizards’ front office, has any real idea if his knee is as good as it was before the injury. If it’s not as good, if he’s lost a little bit of the explosive first step that helped make him a star, he’s not worth a max contract. I’m not quite sure how Gibert intends to prove that he is ready to be the player he was before the injury.
I think he would have been better off waiting a year and striking out for the big contract after a full, healthy year.
