Maple Leaf Fascism?
Glenn Reynolds on Canada’s “Human Rights” Commissions: “They’re commissars without, so far, a fully-functioning KGB. But it’s not for lack of trying.”
Hit the links in Instapundit’s post and read up on what’s been happening to the right of Free Speech up north.
It’s stupefying to know that our good neighbors have fallen so far that they would allow such a thing to become part of their government. Fascism really is an appealing way of running a government when you live with the certain knowledge that you know what’s best for everyone. Of course, if you’re one of the unwashed masses who hasn’t quite bought into the “greater good”, then you’ll find yourself on the wrong end of the government’s power.
Don’t think by the way, that what’s happening there can’t happen here. Democrats are already considering bringing back the “Fairness Doctrine” that would require broadcast outlets to give each side of a discussion equal time. That sounds like a great idea, but it runs exactly counter to our Constitution and it has nothing, really, to do with “being fair” but with killing talk radio, which has been a painful thorn in the left’s side for a couple decades now. If we’re not careful, we’ll start there and soon we’ll be hauling people whose political ideas run counter to those of of the ruling party before courts and commissions for nothing more than airing their opinions.
If that appeals to you, well, then you’re probably one of the self-righteous busybodies who can’t wait to strap up your pastel jackboots and start stomping on those meanie-faces who say those things that get your nerves all jangled and make you pout so unprettily. Canada, at least the government there, would love to have you.

I think I read somewhere that New Mexico (the state) has a Human Rights Commision very much like the ones in Canada. I think it was Mark Steyn but I don't remember.
