At least if it happens now, it won’t kill a few thousand Americans too. Fortunately for us, we don’t give a rat’s patoot what he wishes:

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) – The accused al Qaeda mastermind of the September 11 attacks stood in a U.S. military court on Thursday, sang a chant of praise to Allah and said he would welcome the death penalty.

“This is what I wish, to be martyred,” Pakistani captive Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the highest-ranking al Qaeda operative in U.S. custody, told the Guantanamo war crimes court.

The article goes on to say that Ramzi Binalshibh is looking for the same martyrdom treatment.

We shouldn’t give it to them. What we should do is stick them back in their cells in Gitmo, take away all the extra treats we’ve been giving them, and make sure they know that they will be staying there until such time as we are convinced that their Islamist friends are no longer waging war on us. We should not feel the obligation to speed either of them along to paradise. Actually, we’re better off if we don’t. His fellow Islamists would get a real charge out of knowing that KSM and his cohorts managed to convince the hated Americans to make them martyrs. Matyrdom is the easy way out for all of them. They need to go the hard way – denied their virginal paraside because they did not die as martyrs but as old men, well-fed and cared for by the Great Satan.

I’m a big fan of the military putting out the occasional press release saying that we still have them in custody and that they’re going to live a long and healthy life in jail. Their detention has nothing to do with justice or crime and everything to do with winning a war that we never wanted to fight in the first place. Executing KSM and Ramzi Binalshibh would hurt our efforts to crush Islamism. Keeping them around is to our benefit and, until the Islamists repent of their intentions to enslave us all, we should keep them safe and secure in a military prison.
