More Political Progress in Iraq.
There’s been no political progre…what??
BAGHDAD (AP) – The United Arab Emirates said Thursday it would name an ambassador to Baghdad in the coming days, making it the first Arab country to restore a full diplomatic mission to Iraq since Saddam Hussein’s ouster.
The UAE, by the way, is where you find Dubai, recently pilloried (unfairly, I think to me) for attempting to run terminals in several of our ports. Dubai has, in the past, been a relatively friendly haven for Islamists, though they are much better than most in the region at keeping them at bay. This is very good news for the people Iraq and for the nascent government they are trying to strengthen.
What strikes me as most notable is that the UAE is mostly Sunni while the Iraqi government is mostly Shiite. This demonstrates that, indeed, Sunni and Shia can work together for constructive and civilized purposes and not just for spreading Islamism around the globe.
